Carlon Ruth Stokes, 85 of Palm Coast, FL. passed away peacefully on June 4, 2021 at the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House. She was born on October 8, 1935 in Earlington, Kentucky to the late Shelby Thomas and Lois Louise Fugate (Browning). She graduated from Earlington High School Class of 1953. Carlon was a sophomore cheerleader and she caught the eye of a fellow senior student photographer who happened to be taking photos of the game and the rest is 70 years of history. She married the love of her life James Wyatt Stokes in 1955 and together they raised 5 children. In 1972 the family moved to South Florida. Carlon opened and managed a fabric and craft store in Pompano Beach, she then went on to work for Luria’s jewelry store. In 1978 they then moved to Fort Collins, Colorado where she worked for NCR as a lab technician for 10 years having never missed a day of work. Upon her retirement she and her husband together built a log cabin in Glacier View, CO. Carlon began to miss the warm Florida weather and in 1994 they had a home built on the beachside in Palm Coast where they finally settled. She was an amazing seamstress who took pride in sewing clothing for her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed crafting, needlepoint, and quilting. Carlon was a devout Baptist she attended Flagler Beach Baptist Church where she headed up crafts during summer Bible School. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her. Carlon was preceded in death by her brother, Jerry Wayne Fugate; sister, Londa Dean Dillingham. Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Jim W. Stokes; children, Elaine (Ronnie) Owens, Dwight Stokes, Julie Stokes, Paul Stokes, Susan (Steve Chaffee) grandchildren, Chris (Tricia Patterson) McCoy, David McCoy and his partner Jimmy Gomez, Jessica (Bryson) Simpkin, Zach Chaffee, Ellie Chaffee; great-granddaughter, Xaylee Simpkin; brother, Donnie (Dorothy) Fugate and many more relatives and her beloved church family.
