Catherine Margaret Wolczanski Hammond of Palm Coast Florida passed away on December 3, 2020 at her home. She was 77 years old. Catherine was born on October 17, 1943 in South Amboy, NJ to Helen Trzesniowski Wolczanski and Joseph Wolczanski. She spent her younger years in New Jersey attending Woodbridge HS and then attended Duquesne University and graduate school at Michigan State. It was at Michigan State where she met her husband, David Stewart Hammond. They were married in 1969 and spent the next 51 years traveling the world together, along with their daughters, Jessica Stewart Hammond-Graf (Yancy Hammond-Graf) and Alexis Cathryn Hammond Segrest Schutt (Thomas Schutt).
As a military wife Catherine worked at several different positions, along with raising her daughters alone because of her husband’s frequent deployments and overseas tours, throughout the years. These included substitute teaching, (she earned a Master’s Degree in Curriculum Development) running a Girl Scout Troop, teaching macramé, and lastly as a Personal Specialist for the United States Army Europe as a Department of the Army Civilian. Catherine spent much of her spare time writing letters and mailing cards to family and friends; a task she very much enjoyed. Since David spent 25 years in the US Army, she had contacts on every continent and kept in touch. As an amazing linguist she spoke seven languages. Catherine loved dancing and was a great fan of 1950’s old time rock and roll music. She had a large collection of original 45RPM records from that era. As an avid reader she very much enjoyed historical fiction, along with mysteries. Catherine was a spark of light with a tremendous outgoing personality, a quick sense of humor, and a large heart who gave greatly of herself and was a true philanthropist. Catherine is preceded in death by her beloved Grandmother, Catherine Trzesniowski, and her parents, Helen and Joseph Wolczanski. Catherine is survived by her husband of 51 years, David Stewart Hammond; her daughters; Jessica Stewart Hammond-Graf (Yancy) of Baltimore, MD, Alexis Cathryn Hammond Segrest Schutt (Thomas) of Auburn, AL; her grandchildren Dalton Segrest (Jessica), Peyton Segrest, Mayson Schutt, Karston Schutt, Carter Schutt, and Anna Katherine Schutt; her niece and nephew Kerry Hammond (Sarah), Kenneth Hammond (Morgan) her special cousins Kyle Jedrusiak (Cheryl), Wayne Loux (Nancy), Pamela Loux, and Nancy Granas (Vinnie) and a host of additional cousins. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Stephen Hammond (Edie) of Chester, New Jersey.
