
Charles was born on January 9, 1933 to Leon and Margaret Hayes in Pelham, Georgia. After graduating from high school he served in the Air Force from 1953-1957 as an electronic technician. He married Carol Ann Johnston in 1955 in Thomasville, Georgia and had 3 kids, Gary, David and Kimberly. After the Air Force he immediately started work at General Dynamics at Kennedy Space Center on the Atlas Centaur Program. He worked with the original Astronauts on some of the most important launch programs in history. He lived in Orlando then later moved to Titusville, Florida, had a great career and retired at age 57 in 1991. After a few years of retirement he started a home business, Space Coast Engraving, for 15 years. He loved golfing, tennis and the Masonic organization. He was a 50 year Mason, 33rd degree Scottish Rite, WM Winter Park Lodge 239, WM Gateway Lodge 384, WM Indian River Lodge 90, DDGM 1997 Dist 26. He was also a member of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, AZAN Shrine Club and Knights Templar.
Charles is predeceased by wife Carol Hayes, 2 sons, Gary and David Hayes, sister, Vera Williams and brother, Herbert Hayes.
Charles is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Hammond, son-in-law, Brian Hammond and 2 grandsons he loved dearly, Scot and Jake Hammond.
Charles was a very comforting, positive soul and loved by many. He will be greatly missed.
