Daniel was born May 18, 1950, in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Duncan and Helen (Carrick) MacFarlan. After graduating from high school, he attended Marquette University.
Dan enjoyed a long and successful career in the apparel industry, working for several companies throughout his professional life. His career started in Illinois and then took him to St. Louis, Texas, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina, creating many friendships and memories along the way. He retired as Executive Vice President of VF Corporation. Following his retirement, Dan and his wife, Susan, made their home at Hammock Dunes in Palm Coast, Florida.
Dan had a true zest for life and enjoyed golfing, boating, tinkering around the house, watching college basketball, and cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals. He had a great love for travel and enjoyed exploring the world with family and friends. Whether visiting a faraway destination or discovering a favorite local spot, Dan appreciated the experiences, stories, and people he encountered along the way. He was also a proud purveyor of local dives and could always appreciate a good hidden gem. Above all else, Dan was devoted to his family. Of all the titles he held throughout his life, none meant more to him than “Papa.” His grandchildren were his pride and joy and truly meant the world to him. The time he spent with them and the memories they created together were among his greatest treasures.
Dan is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Susan (Barmueller) MacFarlan; his two daughters, Karen (Brian) Westbrook and Denise (Clark) Cutshaw; his five grandchildren, Carson, Griffin, Mac, Emerie, and Brady; and his sister, Carol (Bill) Broback. He was preceded in death by his parents, Duncan and Helen MacFarlan; his brother, Douglas; and his sister, Margaret.
Dan will be remembered for his love of family, his adventurous spirit, his sense of humor, and his ability to enjoy both the grand adventures and simple pleasures of life. His greatest legacy will live on through the family he loved so dearly.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Condolences may be shared with the MacFarlan family through Dignity Memorial.
