Darlene C. Poirier passed away on May 22,2020 in the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House, Palm Coast,Fl., at the age of 78 . She amazingly survived 8 years of multiple bouts of lymphoma and an aortic valve replacement. She survived this ordeal with love, good humor, and a smile when it seemed bleek, and we were awed by her stamina and good grace. To the very end she loved being active with her family and friends. She is finally pain and worry free in the embrace of loved ones who previously departed this Earth, including her parents, Stephen and Catherine Macko, and our son, Shaun.
A native of Paterson, New Jersey, she lived in Eugene, Oregon and Gainesville, Florida before residing in Upper Arlington, Columbus, and Worthington, Ohio for 33 years. Upon retiring in 2001 she moved to Halifax Plantation, Ormond Beach, Florida.
Darlene graduated from Eastside High School in Paterson, N.J. She received a B.A. degree from Paterson State College and an M.Ed. from The Ohio State University. She taught social studies, mathematics, computers, science and health in Hilliard Ohio, for 25 years. She was an active member of both the Language Arts and Social Studies Societies.
Darlene settled in Halifax Plantation where she was an original member of the Halifoxes and active in the book club, and the theater, travel, and ladies day out groups. Her hobbies included tennis, mahjongg, bunco, dominoes, reading and traveling. She loved to host parties with our friendly and ever caring neighbors and other good friends. She and her husband, Frank (Gene), travelled widely during his research career and later for leisure in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America, as well as the United States.
Darlene is survived by her husband of 57 years Dr. Frank (Gene) Poirier, retired chairperson of the Department of Anthropology, The Ohio State University. Darlene is the proud and loving mother of two loving, educated and competent daughters. The older daughter, Alyson Poirier, lives in Columbus, Ohio. The younger daughter, Sevanne Epperson, lives in Durham, North Carolina with her wonderful husband Joseph Epperson. Darlene was the very proud grandmother of two talented, energetic, polite and compassionate young men —Michael and Andrew Epperson. Darlene was the loving sister of Estelle Valentino and her husband Vincent Valentino of Vero Beach and their children. Darlene was a loving, smiling and considerate individual to our friends and neighbors.
The Church service for Darlene included only immediate family members and was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bunnell, Florida on May 26,2020. The Remembrance of Life Celebration was at our home on May 26,2020. Funeral arrangements were made by Craig Flagler Palms in Flagler Beach, Fl.
