511 Old Kings Road South, Flagler Beach, FL
May 9, 1937 – July 26, 2020
Darrell May passed on from this life peacefully on July 26, 2020 in Orange City, FL at the age of 83. Darrell was born in Erie, Pennsylvania on May 9, 1937, moments before his twin sister Carol. The twins joined 4 older children of Ralph and Elsie May. Darrell graduated from Academy High School and then joined the US Army, where he served in Germany as a Security Agent specializing in Morse Code. Upon his honorable discharge in 1960, he returned to Erie and started at Lord Corporation as a stock boy and then a drill press operator.
He met a cute secretary named Carol Cavalski in 1961 and married her in September the next year. He continued at Lord’s while taking a full college course load at night. By 1970, he had a Bachelors of Science in Math and 3 beautiful children.
To advance his career, he moved the family to Simsbury, Connecticut and then East Greenwich, Rhode Island, where he started with Allendale Insurance as Manager of Operations Analysis. When he retired almost 25 years later, he was the Chief Information Officer and a Senior Vice President.
After retirement, Darrell and Carol sold their house and their snow shovels and settled into their golden years in Palm Coast, Florida. They enjoyed the Grand Haven golf course, treasured many friendships, and celebrated more than 50 years of marriage.
Darrell was preceded in death by Carol in 2017 and all 5 of his brothers and sisters. His legacy includes three children (Colleen Fulton of Leesburg, VA; Lori May Simpson of Dublin, OH; and Douglas May of Boston, MA) and 5 grandchildren (Connor Anderson, Ryan Anderson, Teddy Simpson, Caroline Simpson, and Annie May).
We remember Darrell as an exceptional and loving father, an intelligent and sensitive leader, and a loyal husband. He achieved whatever he set out to do, was kind to others, and loved his family above all else. We will miss his advice, encouragement, and his “hugs through the phone”.
