Diane was born in Staten Island, New York on October 27, 1944, to first-generation U.S. citizens whose parents immigrated from Sicily, Italy in the late 1800s. After high school and some college, Diane worked at AT&T in the mail room, eventually promoted to travel manager where she had the opportunity to visit many places, including Rome, Paris, and Switzerland. In 1974, she married Robert Smith, the captain of a research vessel in NYC. They enjoyed boating on the weekends. In 1978, their beloved daughter, Melissa, was born and they moved to Jackson, NJ where Diane was employed as an office manager for 21 years. Diane continued traveling throughout the U.S. in their camper every summer. Upon retirement, they moved to Flagler Beach, Florida. In 2001, her cherished granddaughter, Ramona Smith, was born.
In addition to traveling with family, she loved Elvis and Sinatra, was an avid reader, and watched scary movies (Dracula). She considered herself a “foodie” and had a large collection of cookbooks. Diane was a Donald Duck fan who was fond of saying Mickey Mouse couldn’t hold a candle to him.
Diane lived a long and happy life with family and friends who loved her very much. She will be in our hearts always. Her parting words for us: “I love my family dearly. I wish the best for all of you. Be kind to each other and remember me with love.”
