Fortunato V. Cruz was born on March 26, 1935 in Techaluta, Jalisco, Mexico to the late Miguel Cruz and Maria Guadalupe Cruz Velasquez. He married his true love Victoria on October 15, 1955 and started their family. Wanting to provide a better life, he emigrated to the United States in 1957 and worked for General Motors. When he wasn’t working, you could find Fortunato spending time in one of his greatest joys, soccer (no, it wasn’t his Cadillac)! Fortunato worked out daily to ensure he could stay in shape, playing soccer regularly until he was 55. If there was a soccer game being televised, Fortunato was sure to watch – especially when his beloved Las Chivas were playing. Fortunato loved celebrating the family together and believed every celebration was that much better if there was a mariachi band to sing along with. Rest assured, even if there was no band, Fortunato would serenade you and anyone else that was in the room.
After 35 years of dedicated service, Fortunato and Victoria retired to their beautiful home in Ciudad Guzman, Jalisco, Mexico. They enjoyed their retirement thoroughly, even renewing their vows and having a Boda de Oro (Wedding of Gold) to celebrate 50 years of marital bliss in 2005. Missing their children, they moved back to the United States settling in Palm Coast in 2010. Fortunato’s devotion to his catholic faith never wavered as he attended weekly Sunday masses at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. Fortunato was a man who loved his routine, whether it was his weekly meal at Denny’s or his daily 8:00p bowl of cheerios before bed, he never missed a beat on schedule.
On September 10, 2021, Fortunato was reunited with his wife Victoria who preceded him in death in 2016. He passed away peacefully at the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House. He is survived by his beloved children, Maria Natividad, Gloria (Charles), Rafael, Michael (Katie); his adored grandchildren, Isabelle (Orlando), Nicole (Thomas), Jacquelyn (Leonel), Lauren (Chris), Lance, Logan, Charles Jr., Cali, Henry (Jessica), Hayley, Olivia, Raina and Michael; and his beautiful great-grandchildren, Maia, Ariana, Jocelyn, Nicolas, Landon, Jacob, Elena, Harper, Stephan, Karrie, Katie; and countless relatives, friends, and church family.
