Gerald A. Gundry, 87, of Palm Coast, Florida, passed away on April 12, 2025. Born on April 3, 1938, in Reading, Pennsylvania, Gerald was affectionately known as “Coach” to the many lives he touched throughout his life.
He was the beloved son of the late John and Dorothy Gundry. After graduating from Belleville High School in New Jersey, Gerald proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, spending two years stationed in Germany. Upon returning home, he pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in History from Upsala College, followed by a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Montclair University.
Gerald dedicated over 20 years to teaching History at Saddle Brook High School, where he also made a lasting impact as head coach of the football team and coach of the track team. Summers were spent working as a millwright in construction, a job he took pride in until his eventual retirement.
Beyond the classroom and football field, Gerald found joy in many things—playing golf and pool, doing odd jobs around the house, floating in the pool, traveling the world and bar-hopping with his beloved wife Marilyn (especially on cruises), playing football (only a knee injury prevented him from fulfilling a contract with what later became the N.Y. Jets), coaching and watching football, sharing stories with friends, and enjoying the occasional cigar.
He was preceded in death by his children, Jerry Gundry Jr. (2005) and Lori Gundry (2020). Gerald is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Marilyn; his son Lance (Susan) Gundry; grandchildren Katherine Florez (Juan), Krista Gundry, Camryn Gundry, and Alyssa Gundry; and many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Gerald’s legacy of strength, wisdom, and kindness lives on through all who knew and loved him. He was a loving husband, a fun-loving and supportive father and grand-father, an inspiring coach, a challenging teacher, an expert millwright, and a loyal patriot.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
