Howard Michael Emery

November 21, 1946July 29, 2020

Howard Michael Emery, 73, of Espanola, died Wednesday, July 29, 2020, at home. He was the son of the late David Harold Emery and Grace Lord Emery, also of Espanola. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Connie Emery; a brother, Quentin Emery (Carol Lynda) of Bunnell; sisters, Beverly Emery of Bunnell and Kathryn Rich of Providence; a son, David Emery (Sandy) of Bunnell; daughters, Tracey Barnett (Mark) of Cape Coral, Melissa Mondello (Keith) of Palm Coast, and Amber Mayhew (Sean) of Live Oak; a step-daughter, Martha Bucholtz (Bill) of Okeechobee; 14 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 9 step-great grandchildren, several cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his sister, Celia Joyce Oliver. He was a 1964 graduate of Bunnell High School where he played the trumpet in the marching band. He was also a former member of the Espanola Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as firefighter/EMT for many years. He enjoyed farming, carpentry, hunting and spending time with family and friends. He was native of Flagler County and loved discussing local history. He was a genealogist and historian with a vast knowledge of the tri-county area. He knew the back trails of Flagler, Putnam and St. John’s counties and the people who lived there. He had a really good memory, liked to do good deeds and make people feel good. He never met a stranger and kept in touch with his classmates over the years. Relationships were important to him and he would often take the time to call and talk to friends and relatives to check on them. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Advent Health Palm Coast Foundation, 60 Memorial Medical Parkway, Palm Coast, FL 32164. A private, graveside service is planned.

Connie, Amber and every member of his wonderful family - I have known Howard for only a short time, but discovered his grace, compassion and sense of humor immediately upon our meeting. I saw him nearly every time that he visited the Mayhew family and loved to listen to his memories and ideas. Rest with Jesus without pain and illness, Howard. Will miss that charming smile. Comfort to all your family and friends. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Howard was always a southern gentleman. He was gentle, sweet and very respectful. The world needs more Howard Emery’s. Growing up in Flagler County in our days was a family affair. It was a time when community was family. Howard was one of those special men that reach out to keep our community/family in touch with each other. I will miss you and not forget your kindness Howard. I’m sure Howard will have many crowns in heaven. Claiming Gods promise of comfort and peace for Howard’s family.

My deepest sympathies to the Emery Family. They were the first family we met when we moved to Bunnell in1957. Uncle Howard (that’s how I knew him all my life) always had a hug ready whenever he saw me. I was blessed to have had him in my life. God bless!

I am so sorry for yalls loss. He was such a sweet and caring man. I have always called him Uncle Howard because of the friendship between him and Daddy. I can only imagine what they are gabbing about! When I saw him at the reunion he had to show me pictures of Daddy. They were more like brothers, per Uncle Howard's words. Love you all!
