Born on March 4, 1948, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Janice was the beloved daughter of Thomas and Irene Zalenski. In childhood, she grew up side by side, facing life's challenges and joys together with siblings Laraine and Raymond. From childhood escapades to adult achievements, they had a close unbreakable bond into adulthood navigating life’s journey together. A 1966 graduate of Henry Snyder High School, she began her adult life in nearby Bayonne, later moving down the Jersey Shore to Leonardo where she devoted herself to raising a family rooted in kindness, strength, and joy.
Janice worked for many years as a dedicated secretary for the Middletown Township Board of Education before retiring in 2002. In retirement, she and her husband Pete made their home in Palm Coast, Florida, embracing a life of well-earned peace and fulfillment.
An avid gardener and devoted bird enthusiast, Janice found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She traveled widely—relishing cruises to the Caribbean and Alaska—and never missed a Georgia Bulldogs or Alabama Crimson Tide game. But above all, her greatest happiness came from time spent with her family. Siblings, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, whose lives were enriched by her boundless love, patience, and grace.
Janice is lovingly remembered by her sons, Anthony (Marie) and Christopher; stepsons Peter Jr. (Julia) and Carmen; her cherished grandchildren, Courtney (Ricky), Nicholas, Hailey, Chloe and Lilly and her adored great-grandchildren, Lucas, Gauge, and Jaxson. She is also survived by her loving sister, protector, confidant, and biggest cheerleader of support, Laraine Leclaire (Danny), and beloved brother, Raymond Zalenski (Carolina), siblings who were always there no matter the distance or time, built in best friends always ready with advice and support, her occasional partners-in-mischief; and multiple nieces and nephews and great-grand nieces. Janice is preceded in death by her husband Peter Genovese and father of her children Rocco Tortorella.
A celebration of Janice’s life will be held on Friday, June 27, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Flagler Beach Community Church, 915 S. Daytona Avenue in Flagler Beach, with Rev. Bill Elias officiating. Family and friends are invited to gather from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the church prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Janice’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org.
