Jean was born in Chicago, Illinois, to James and Libby Mach on May 4, 1945. She grew up in Cicero, IL, and graduated from Morton East High School in 1963.
After high school, she became a Registered Nurse, then went on for her MSN and eventually her school nurse certification. From visiting nurse on the south side of Chicago, to nursing instructor, to school nurse, she loved each path of her work journey. But even more, Jean loved spending her time with family and friends.
Jeanette is survived by her husband, Vernon Showalter, their children Rebecca (Christian) Ginter, David (Jennifer Vianello) Showalter, and Philip (Kristi) Showalter, plus grandchildren Benjamin and Vonn, Olivia and Libby. Also, her sister, Marcy (Charles) Jahr, and many other family and friends. Jean was loved by many and will be deeply missed.
Both Jean and Vernon were active in the Mt. Morris Church of the Brethren and were instrumental in the beginning of their community food pantry. They not only remained active in church and community activities after they retired, but got more involved. Even after they moved in to The Windsor assisted living community in Palm Coast, FL, they continued to enjoy Bible studies, attending church with Rebecca and Christian, and many of the activities within the community. Jean’s family greatly appreciates the love and care she was shown by Windsor and hospice staff.
A celebration of life will be scheduled for Spring or Summer of 2023 in Cadott, WI, where she will be laid to rest in the Bohemian National Cemetery with three preceding generations of her family, including her parents. Details will be provided once arrangements are finalized.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Heifer International, www.heifer.org or Parkinson’s Foundation, www.parkinson.org. Both organizations have options to donate in memory of someone.
