It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Julian Boyden, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who departed this life on May 7, 2026, at the age of 82. Born on March 3, 1944, in Ilford, Essex, UK, Julian was the beloved son of the late Irene and William Boyden. His journey through life was one marked by a profound love for learning, an unwavering dedication to his family, and a deep appreciation for, and curiosity about, the world around him.
Julian's early years were spent in Ilford, where he nurtured a keen interest in the sciences along with his exceptional clarity of thought and his irreverent sense of humor. His academic journey led him to Reed School in Surrey, England, where he laid the foundations for a remarkable educational pursuit (while simultaneously annoying the daylights out of his headmaster!). Julian's insatiable thirst for knowledge saw him earn degrees in Chemistry, Accountancy, and then an MBA from the prestigious MIT Sloan School of Business in 1976. His research in Chemistry earned him several awards, a testament to his dedication and brilliance in the field. Even in retirement, Julian's love of learning never waned. He pursued his passion for history, gaining a Master's degree in the subject History at the University of Central Florida in his late 60s.
Julian’s career flourished as he moved from the industrial to the business side of things, and he rose through the ranks to the role of CEO of Bush Boake Allen (BBA), a company that he transformed during his tenure, and then to Senior Vice President of International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF) following its acquisition of BBA.
Beyond his professional achievements, Julian was a man of diverse interests. A voracious reader, he immersed himself in books that spanned genres, epochs and continents, always eager to expand his horizons. Julian’s work took him and his family all around the world, including living and raising a family in Malaysia and Singapore for many years. It was here that he developed an appreciation for travel, and other cultures and foods, quickly learning to enjoy curry, chicken’s foot soup, hawker stall noodles and many other delicacies! His profound love of travel continued into retirement, as he and his wife Doris continued to explore the world together, savoring the flavors and experiences of different cultures. Julian's passion for food and travel was not just about the destinations but about the connections he made and the stories he gathered along the way. He could, and would, talk to anyone, about anything, keen to engage people in conversation and debate, share a joke, and always willing to discuss life, the universe and everything in between.
Julian shared a beautiful life with his devoted wife, Doris. Their marriage of 58 years stands as a testament to lifelong love and partnership. Together, they raised two wonderful daughters, Rebecca and the late Natasha Boyden, creating a family life filled with love and laughter. Julian's legacy continues through his two cherished grandchildren, Thomas and Petra Hennessy who brought immense joy and pride to his life.
In addition to his family, Julian's circle of close friends and relatives will remember him for his warmth, wisdom, and genuine kindness. His presence in their lives was a source of strength and inspiration that will be sorely missed.
Julian’s remarkable life was punctuated with many personal challenges, including the loss of his daughter Natasha just three years ago, several serious health issues and a late-in-life diagnosis of severe autism. He met all of these challenges with determination, grace and a wicked sense of humour that endured to the very end.
A private funeral ceremony will be held to honor Julian's life, providing a moment for those closest to him to reflect and celebrate the remarkable journey of his life. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that you consider making a donation in Julian's name to Organization for Autism Research (www.researchautism.org), or to educational charities, ensuring that his passion for learning continues to inspire future generations.
Julian Boyden's life formed an incredibly rich tapestry woven with love, knowledge, iron logic, humour and a boundless curiosity about the world. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace, reunited with Natasha and all those he held dear, and may his memory be a blessing and inspiration to all who knew him.
