June Ann McDonough, 91, of Palm Coast, Florida, passed away on September 22, 2022. June was a tough old bird! She was born to parents Harold Merz and Consiglia (June) Cortese on March 02, 1931, in Brooklyn, NY. Growing up, June aspired to be the next Shirley Temple, and her most fond memory was getting roller skates when she was 5 years old and learning to skate in her living room.
She graduated from Fontbonne Hall in Brooklyn, New York, where she learned to peel a banana with a knife and fork. Despite this curriculum, June, coming from a long line of strong-willed women, retained her will of steel.
She went on to study Education at Oswego State (SUNY), where she met her future husband, Roger “Mac” McDonough, on the first day of classes when he offered her and her girlfriends a ride home in his rumble seat; she went on to get a Master’s degree in Education at the University of Alabama, Birmingham and was working towards her Doctorate in Education.
June had a long career working as an elementary school teacher, which spanned 3 states, and over 35 years. She began teaching at the Our Lady of the Magnificat in Kinnelon, NJ. where June taught some of her own children, as well as a niece and nephew. She briefly paused her teaching career to continue her own graduate studies at the University of Alabama, when Roger took a new job in Birmingham. June then went on to teach at the Albion Street School in Los Angeles when he accepted a job with ITT in CA. June finished her teaching career teaching Gifted and Talented until 1995 at Packanack Elementary School in Morris County, NJ where she and Rog had loved raising their children in Fayon Lakes.
She enjoyed a playing golf, bridge, traveling, Christmas crafts, and was an enthusiastic reader, and watcher of reality TV.
June met Roger McDonough in 1948. They were married in 1950 in New York. Together they raised 6 children: Curtis McDonough, Douglas McDonough, Laurene McDonough, Jeffrey McDonough, Scott McDonough, and Kelley McDonough. June believed her greatest accomplishment was raising her six children, and passing ON her stubborn will to live.
June is survived by son Doug & wife Donna, daughter Laurie & husband Steve, son Jeff & wife Katie, son Scott & wife Cindy, and daughter Kelley. June was blessed to have 18 grandchildren as well as 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by Harold Merz, father, John Mascali, step-father, Elaine Kassar, sister, Curtis McDonough, son, June Mascali, mother, Roger McDonough, husband.
The family has entrusted Craig Flagler-Palms Funeral Home with the arrangements. A Memorial Mass is scheduled for Monday, September 26, 2022, at 2 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.
