HUMBERGER, Marjorie Anna Bacon

Marjorie Anna Humberger (known to most as Marge), age 98, entered eternal rest on February 20, 2024, surrounded by her adoring family at her home in Bunnell, Florida. Marge was born, one of five children, in Trafford, PA to Walter Clark Bacon and Gertrude Regina (Hooper) Bacon on October 15, 1925. Despite losing her mother to pneumonia at age 5, little Marjorie grew to be a strong, loving, and compassionate young woman, daughter, Registered Nurse, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

During WWII, young Marjorie secured a position at the Westinghouse Air Brake Company in Trafford, taking the manufacturing position of a departing soldier, which she held for three years, until the successful return of that soldier at War’s end. She then enrolled in Shadyside Hospital’s School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, PA, from which she graduated three years later in 1949 as a Registered Nurse.

While in nursing school, Marge met the love of her life, George Henry Humberger, from nearby Jeannette, PA, who with his good friend Bill Wall was on his way to build houses in Daytona Beach, Florida. Upon George’s return to PA, Marge and George married in March of 1950 and moved to Daytona Beach in February of 1952. Marjorie returned to nursing at Halifax District Hospital in 1954 where she worked the night shift for nearly four decades serving in many capacities, notably as Night Supervisor of the Hospital, and Charge Nurse of the Emergency Room.

Marge and George bought a home on Arlington Avenue, in Daytona Beach, Florida in 1952 and raised their three children, Mary, George and Mark there until 1968 when they moved to a small farm in Flagler County, near Bunnell. Marge also founded and was the Director of the Flagler County Ambulance Service for a number of years. A woman of strong faith, she for decades was an ardent and faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Bunnell, FL, attending most church services and Sunday School services alike. In her Sunday school class, the Dorcas Class, she happily volunteered to send greeting cards to those church members who might benefit from a cheery, supportive greeting.

A true testament to the power of love and selflessness, Marge’s dedication to her family, her patients and her co-workers during her outstanding nursing career was nothing short of remarkable. She was a loving mother and a blessing to all her children, grandchildren, great grand children and indeed to all her family.

Marge was predeceased by her father and mother, beloved husband George Humberger, son George Daniel Humberger, brothers Walter Clark Bacon, Daniel Hungerford Bacon, Robert Martin Bacon and sister Mary Ellen Bacon Smith.

She is survived by her son, Mark Walter Humberger of Bunnell, daughter Mary Moore Bethea (Gray) of Atlanta, GA, grandsons, Joshua Humberger (Nancy) of Hesperia, CA, Justin Humberger (Rachel) of Rockledge, FL, and Dalton Humberger (Genesis) of Lawrenceville, GA., Jacob Ellis (Melissa)of Merritt Island, FL, and six great grandchildren, Bennie, Eva, Hamden, Honey, Jacob & Madeline.

Also surviving are her brothers in law, Joseph Humberger (Kazuko) of Grapeville, PA, Anthony Humberger and John Humberger (Diane) of Jeannette, PA, and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family acknowledges with gratitude the extraordinary care that our dear mother received from her decades long wonderful family physician Alphonza McCollum, Jr., MD of Ormond Beach as well as her terrific caregivers with Gentiva Hospice. Our heartfelt thanks go out to Millie, Keya, Lynn, Tom, Dana, Andrea, Meggie and Vickie.

Always an independent woman, Marge requested that there be no Memorial or Funeral services. The family acknowledges with gratitude the condolences expressed on the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister in law. Always a lover of animals, Marge would wish that any remembrance of her life be made, if so desired, in the form of an act of kindness or a contribution to a local Humane Society or to any organization dear to one's own heart.

Arrangements are in the care and trust of Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home.
