A memorial service celebrating the life of Steven Edwin Jones, of Palm Coast will be on Sunday, March 31, 2019 at Craig– Flagler Palms Funeral Home, 511 Old Kings Road South, Flagler Beach.Friends are invited to visit the family from 1:00 p.m. until service time at 3:00 p.m.
Steven Edwin Jones, 74, a resident of Flagler County for 34 years, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, March 25, 2019 after a long struggle with Frontotemporal Dementia. Steven was born in Los Angeles, CA on December 3, 1944 to the late W. Edwin and Rachel Coffman Jones. With the tremendous growth in the aerospace industry, Steven and his family moved to Cocoa Beach in 1961 where he graduated from Cocoa Beach High School in 1962, followed by two years at Brevard Community College. By 1966 he graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a BA in Humanities. After graduation from FAU, Steven volunteered to enter the Peace Corps. He served in El Salvador and Nicaragua. This time of service was pivotal in defining who he became. Throughout his life Steven never lost his joy of learning and his zeal of being an advocate for others. He loved studying the history and culture of the areas in which he lived and worked. After returning from the Peace Corps, Steven continued his lifetime of service to others. Over the years he was the Executive Director of self-help housing programs in Wisconsin and South Florida as well as Executive Director of Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) and the Director of Modernization for the Housing Authority of Savannah, GA.In 1984 an available construction management position with ITT made it possible for Steven and his family to move to Flagler County. While in Palm Coast he made many positive contributions to our community. Steven went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Central Florida. This degree provided a spring board to become the Executive Director of Senior Services and Flagler County Transportation.
Over the years Steven was involved in numerous organizations and activities in Flagler County including the following: President of Sunrise Rotary and Palm Coast Community Service Corporation; Flagler Chamber of Commerce; Flagler County and City of Palm Coast Historical Societies; Princess Place Preserve; AIA Florida Scenic Highway; PTOs in several Flagler County Schools; Boy Scouts of America; and the Housing Authority of Flagler County (gubernatorial appointment).Surviving are: his loving wife of 41 years, Rita Jones; two sons, Patrick Jones and his wife Susan of Princeton, IL; Andrew Jones and his wife Kathern of Palm Coast; three grandchildren whom he adored, Reese, Levi and Lily; brother, Phillip Jones and wife Gail of Pittsburgh, PA; sister, Catherine Lemper of Palm Coast; several nieces and one nephew; and numerous friends and associates who greatly respected him.
