Zdzisław was born in Rakow, Poland, a son of the late Jan and Anna Anuszkiewicz Janczewski. He was the last surviving sibling of six.
Growing up in Poland during one of the most difficult periods in his country’s history, Zdzisław was a member of the Armia Krajowa, the Polish Home Army, during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944 (World War II). As one of the last surviving members of that historic resistance movement, his experiences during the war remained an important part of his remarkable life story.
In 1965, Zdzisław immigrated to the United States in search of new opportunities for himself and his family. He settled in Chicago, Illinois, where he worked for many years as a machinist, assembler, and millwright. After a long and dedicated career, he retired in 1994 and moved to Palm Coast, Florida, where he enjoyed his retirement years.
Zdzisław was a man who enjoyed keeping busy and staying informed about the world around him. He could often be found working on his car, reading, fishing, or engaging in a spirited discussion about politics and current events. He was also a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Korona.
Zdzisław shared 63 years of marriage with his beloved wife, the former Jadwiga Zajac. The couple was married on April 18, 1954, in Jadwiga’s hometown of Charsznica, Poland. Together, they built a life that carried them from Poland to the United States and ultimately to Florida. Jadwiga preceded him in death on August 23, 2017.
Zdzisław leaves behind his two children, Adam Janczewski of Palm Coast, Florida, and Alina Kloczkowski of Schaumburg, Illinois; and three grandsons, Gregory Kloczkowski of Wisconsin, Thomas (Miluska) Kloczkowski of Illinois, and Joseph Janczewski of New York.
His long life spanned extraordinary changes in history, from his youth in wartime Poland and service with the Polish resistance to building a new life and raising a family in America. He will be remembered for his strength, perseverance, independence, and devotion to his family.
Family and friends will be received on Sunday, October 4, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home, 511 Old Kings Road South, Flagler Beach, Florida.
