Born on December 23, 1940, in New York City to the late Mike and Mary Kalan, Zally lived a life full of love, dedication, and adventure. At the age of 18, he served honorably where he was stationed in Alaska during the time that Alaska transitioned into statehood. After completing two years of military service, he returned home and soon met the love of his life, Angela “Angie,” at a Halloween party in 1962. They married on September 20, 1964, and shared over 60 wonderful years together.
Zally and Angie raised their two children in the Ormond Beach area, where he built a successful career in construction. He founded his own company, K & M Developers, Inc., where he was well-respected in his field. After 25 years in construction, Zally embarked on a second career as an over-the-road truck driver, which he enjoyed for another 12 years before until he decided to spend more time at home with his family and friends.
Zally was a man of many passions. He loved playing golf, deep-sea fishing, building Lincoln logs with his grandchildren, and was a devoted fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish team. Pizza, pasta, and ice cream topped off his list of favorites. His warm heart, strong work ethic, and sense of humor left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He never met a stranger. Zally was well known for his story telling.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Steven Kalan.
Zally is survived by his beloved wife Angie; their children, Ron (Cathy) Kalan and Denise Kalan (fiancé Tim Knox); grandchildren, Crystal (Jeremy) Southern and Trevor Etheridge; great-grandchildren, Arabella, Roman, Fox, London, and Charli. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Joseph (Susan) Dolce and their children; sister-in-law, Kathryn (Ken) Parsons and their family; and many more loving relatives and dear friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Zally’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Flagler Humane Society.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
