Juan Avila, 99 years old of Houston, TX, passed away March 3, 2022 in Houston, TX. He was born on March 21, 1922 in a small village outside of Mina, Nuevo Leon, Mexico to the late Francisco and Alberta Gonzales Avila.
He was a member of the Iglesia Bautista Memorial in Waelder, TX and attended Misión Hispana of The Met in Houston, TX.
Juan is survived by his sons Manuel Avila of Waco, Robert Avila Sr. and wife Irene of Rockdale, and Benito Avila of Austin, daughters Estella Thurmond of Austin, Domitila Vigil and husband Louis of San Antonio, Ester Avila of Houston, Guadalupe Avila of Houston, Rebecca Jamo and husband Bob of Chappaqua, NY, Linda Avila and husband David Ramirez of San Antonio, brothers Raimundo Avila of Seguin, sister Felipa Avila Elizondo of Apodaca, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, grandchildren Melissa Luna, Teresa Moran, Raquel Santos, Robert Avila, Jr., Priscilla Avila-Barcak, Michael Thurmond, Kelly Thurmond, Travis Torres, Connie Torres, Lucas Ramirez, Alexandra Arguijo,16 great-grandchildren, and ten great-great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Antonia D. Avila of 75 years, son Patricio Avila, three brothers, and 4 sisters.
Acting as pallbearers are Manuel Avila, Robert Avila, Benito Avila, Louis Vigil, Bob Jamo, Michael Thurmond, Travis Torres, and Lucas Ramirez.
Visitation is scheduled for 9 a.m. with funeral services following at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2022 at the Smith Funeral Home in Flatonia, TX with Reverend Juan Ruiz officiating. Burial will follow at the Iglesia Bautista Cemetery in Waelder, TX.
