

James (Jim) Schimmel, age 81, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 11, 2025, at Medilodge of Clare, surrounded by his family. Jim was born April 2,1944, in Mt. Clemens, Michigan, the son of the late Vincent and Marie (DeGrandchamp) Schimmel. A graduate of St. Clement High School in 1962, Jim enlisted in the Army in 1963 and served in Vietnam until 1966. He drove a school bus for Gerrish Higgins High School for 10 years. Jim then went to work for the Michigan Department of Corrections in the U.P. as a Food Service Supervisor for 15 years before retiring in 2002. Jim married Frances Pomante in 1967 and they had two children, Tim and Marie. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 57+ years; daughter, Marie Schimmel of St. Louis; granddaughter, Madison (Dylan) Schimmel of St. Louis; extra son, Gary (Beth) Stoneburner of Texas;
grandson, Wyatt Schimmel of Flint; extra grandson, Trenton Tasker of Vestaburg, MI; siblings, Karen Schimmel of Warren; Ruth (Raymond) Majewski of Centerline and David Schimmel of Chicago, IL.
There will be a memorial service with Military Honors on Monday, April 28, 2025, at Fort Custer National Cemetery, 15501 Dickman Rd., Augusta, MI at 1:00pm. Because of who Jim was, we ask that you wear blue jeans, a plaid or flannel shirt and if you have them, suspenders, in honor of him. He definitely would have had a big smile and an even bigger laugh.
