OBITUARY
Katie Lee Flores
February 28, 1937 – February 10, 2021
Katie Lee Flores, 83, of Swartz Creek, passed away peacefully during the early hours of Wednesday, February 10, 2021. She was born in 1937 in Crockett County, Tennessee and her family moved to the Flint area when she was young. She met the love of her life, Jesse (Jess) Flores, and were married as Jess was drafted into the U.S. Army to be part of the Korean War. When he returned from the war, Jess went back to work at General Motors and they began a family. Katie and Jess dearly loved their family and together had four children, Jesse Jr., Linda, David and Dan. Jesse and Katie were married for more than 60 years. Jesse preceded Katie in death on February 10, 2014. He was 83 as well.
Katie was also preceded in death by children Jesse Jr. and Linda. She is survived by sons David (Jennifer) and Dan (Pamela) and grandchildren, Matt, Aaron, Madison, Nick, Greg and Marnie. She deeply loved her grandchildren and they provided her the strength to weather the many storms throughout her life.
In addition to being devoted to her family, Katie loved spreading the word of God. She ran the religious education program at All Saints Catholic Church for more than 40 years. She also worked as a teacher’s assistant for more than 20 years at Hamady Elementary and Hamady Middle School. She loved teaching and helping children grow toward their potential.
She also was a devoted fan of the original Star Trek series and was rumored to have some of the best chocolate chip cookies in the greater Flint area. She loved all types of sports and could be found in front of the television most evenings watching ESPN with Jess.
Katie gave a lot more than she took and always spoke of the importance of random acts of kindness and being selfless. She left the world a better place.
Special “thank you” to her Swank Assisted Living family in Swartz Creek, who took excellent care of Katie in the final years of her blessed life.

I met Katie in 2001 when I started working for Dr. Werschky, she & Jesse were patients. Katie was beautiful inside and out, always enjoyed seeing her along with Jesse. Katie had great faith in God sharing her kindness with everyone and blessing the office with her special prayer cookies! I’m glad our paths crossed and shared almost 20 years with her.

I remember Katie as a very kind and very caring person. It is such sad news to hear of her passing. She was the first person to introduce me to peanut butter and maple syrup mixed together. Something i have never forgotten. It’s pretty darn great too! She will be missed, but not forgotten. David and Dan and your families, I am so sorry for your loss❤️

Sad to her of Katie's passing. Katie and Jess were like second parents to me. Most of my childhood memories are with the Flores family. Katie taught me how to bake and sew and when I was young I wanted to grow up and be just like her. Katie was a angel here on earth and now in heaven. Sorry for your loss David and Danny and the rest of your family.

Katie was a wonderful mom; so caring and generous and a dear friend. Her circle of care and “random acts of kindness”extended widely to everyone from family to strangers she met! She had a beautiful smile. I have many wonderful stories to share over the years in the Flores family. My favorite was when David and I talked Katie and Jess to meet us in Florida in Orlando; a Disney and NASA adventure....along with Floridian seafoods, fried gator bites and lots of drives through the Everglades and beaches! They were like “crazy kids”, laughing and taking it all in. On the last day at the airport Jess was caught hugging the palm trees saying “goodbye palm trees”. Katie gave me a grin, shook her head and smiled. It was only 4 days but packed with great memories. We are so blessed to have those memories with both Katie and Jess- mom and dad.

Thank you family for your kind and thoughtful comments. It makes a very big difference.
One of my most vivid early memories was my mother taking me to my first day of kindergarten at Pierson Elementary. I recall waiting in the hallway, she was holding my hand. Then at some point I had to go into the classroom and she began to walk away. I asked where are you going and she said she would be back later. It was shocking, I was all alone. I must have been about 6 then, I'm 60 now. A few years ago a conversation came up about that day and what I remembered. She told me she had never left the building and was just down the hallway the whole time. All these years later and I never knew that. I always thought she had gone back home to Pulaski. Now in a similar way my mother seems to have gone but I know she is here in a way I can not comprehend. My father, Linda and baby Jesse are all involved in my daily life in ways I am incapable of understanding. I can accept that. We will always be together.

My heart broke when I heard of Aunt Katie passing. I know she is in Heaven-she once told me that she would be happy with just a little corner of Heaven, I believe she has a mansion. Hugs and prayers of comfort to David and Danny and families.
