Sophie Mary Matsco, age 91 of Flint, passed away on Sunday, February 3, 2019. She was born as the youngest daughter of eight on February 2, 1928 in Lorain, Ohio to parents Walter and Louise (Barczyk) Novak. Sophie was deeply involved with All Saints church as a child and graduated from All Saints High School. She married the love of her life, Frank Matsco, in August of 1958. They attended St. Luke Catholic Church and quickly became a staple of the parish community. The Catholic Church was her anchor. She was involved with the altar society, Bingo, and the New Life Center and volunteered at the St. Michael soup kitchen for many years. Sophie was President and co-owner of the Posie Patch, where she shared her love of flowers through gardening and her undeniable customer service for thirty years before retirement. With a quiet strength, compassion and selflessness, she put others needs before her own. She was a devoted mother, a favorite mother-in-law, amazing grandmother, great sister, loving aunt, and a wonderful friend. Sophie is survived by her children: Mark (Becky) Matsco, Charles Matsco, Cindy Matsco; beloved son-in-law, Jim Schaffer; grandchildren: Joel (Jen) Matsco, Colin (Amy) Matsco, Riley (Emily) Matsco, Lauren (Paul Gelardi) Schaffer, Sarah (Derek Mason) Schaffer; seven great grandchildren; dear sister-in-law, Virginia Matsco; favorite nieces and nephews; many good friends, and her dog, Max. She was preceded in death by both parents; husband, Frank Matsco; daughter, Teresa Schaffer; and her siblings. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11am on Thursday, February 7, 2019 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 2415 Bagley St., Flint. Father Thomas Firestone officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm with a Rosary Service at 7pm at Reigle Funeral Home, 5501 W. Pierson Rd., Flushing. Interment at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Those desiring may make a memorial contribution to St. Luke New Life Center.
