Agnes Siomkos, 88 years old, passed away on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at Calvary Hospice Hospital, Bronx, New York after being ill for several years. She was born on February 22, 1930 in Manhattan, New York to Gus and Areti Nicolaw.
Agnes grew up in Washington Heights where she graduated from George Washington High School. On January 29, 1950 Agnes married Pantelis Siomkos in New York City and they shared 50 years together living in Queens. Her husband, Pantelis, predeceased her in June 2000. Together they raised three daughters and took many trips to Greece, especially Kastoria (Pantelis’ hometown) throughout the years. Agnes was initially a stay at home mom. When her daughters were grown, Agnes worked for twenty years at Reliance Federal Savings Bank in Fresh Meadows, New York, first as a Teller then as a Platform Manager.
Agnes was a devoted mother, grandmother, and homemaker. She loved to entertain and cook for family and friends, spend time in her garden, and dance to Greek and Latin rhythms with Pantelis (especially preferring the tango). Agnes was an accomplished seamstress who could easily sew outfits, coats, slipcovers, and household items for her family and home. She was also an active member of the Benevolent Society Ladies of Kastoria, having chaired and served as an officer in her younger years.
Agnes was predeceased by her loving parents, beloved husband, brother Peter Nicolas, and sister Tessie Bendo. She is survived by her three daughters and their spouses, Stacey and Bill Papalitskas of Basking Ridge, NJ, Rita and Curt Seaton of Westport, CT, Tina and Gus Alimaras of Bayside, NY, including adored grandchildren Justin, John (and fiancée Jennifer), Alyssa, Alexandra, sister-in-law Kitsa Nicolas, as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family expresses special gratitude to health companions Kanunga and Pat, who devoted two years to Agnes’ care so she could remain in her home of 66 years. Agnes will be deeply missed by all.
Funeral arrangements are in the care of the Frederick Funeral Home at 192-15 Northern Blvd., Flushing, New York 11358. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 9 am on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Shrine Church, 196-10 Northern Blvd., Flushing, New York, followed by the interment at Flushing Cemetery, 163-06 46th Ave, Flushing, New York.
