Cheng Hui Liu

Cheng-Hui Liu passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 18th at 5:58pm at the age of 84, after a courageous and determined battle with lung cancer.

She was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed. Cheng-Hui was a brilliant physicist, devoted educator, and dedicated researcher whose intellect and curiosity inspired many. Yet beyond her professional achievements, she was known for her warmth, kindness, and quiet strength. Above all, she was a loving mother and a devoted wife, whose care and compassion shaped the lives of those closest to her.

She is survived by her beloved daughter, Lily Zhang, and her husband, Chun Yuan Zhang, as well as a wide circle of family, friends, colleagues, students, and mentees who were touched by her generosity of spirit. Cheng-Hui had a rare ability to make others feel seen, supported, and valued, and her presence brought light and humanity into every space she entered.

In accordance with Cheng-Hui’s wishes, she will be cremated, and her ashes will be scattered in the ocean—a place of freedom and exploration, where she can continue her journey and remain close to the people and places she loved.
