He leaves behind his loving son Edward Llano and his wife Pata; his loving daughter Marta Llano; his two grandsons, Alejandro Garcia and his companion Nancy Alonso; Joseph Garcia and his companion Jennifer Urbano; his two granddaughters Kassiopia Llano
and Ysatis Llano; his two great-grandsons Abel and Brian; his great-granddaughter Nami; Carlos Guerra who was like a son to him, and many close friends.
He was born in 1921 to parents Damaso Llano and Marta Rodriguez and raised in idyllic Havana, Cuba. However, future events would lead him to a new life in New York.
In his early years, Damaso heeded the wishes of his father and pursued an education at the University of Havana in El Vedado and graduated with a bachelor's degree in law. Around this time he also developed an interest in communications and ran Cine Periodico, a movie newsreel network. However as the years passed, Damaso felt the oppression building as Castro seized control of Cuba. So, in 1961, he fled to Miami with nothing but two nickels in his shoe and the clothes on his back, unable to make his escape with anything else. After this rough start, he gradually built up his business acumen and moved to New York. This ultimately led him to establish the successful El Mundo Supermarket in partnership with Jose Vizcaino and Fidel Vizcaino, located next to his home, which he worked at up until his final days.
Damaso had a passion for life and love and had an active interest in science and current events. Later on in life he would find pleasure in weekly trips to Atlantic City after working all week to mind the store he worked so hard to build.
Damaso will be missed by all who knew him and his generous, warm nature.
Funeral services are being held in New York and Miami.
