Born Evelyn Mary Haggerty on May 18, 1940 to Katherine and Patrick, and raised in Manhattan, Evelyn took pride in her NYC roots. Evelyn - or Lynn - maintained life long relationships with many friends from her Ascension Grammar School and Cathedral High School days.
In May of 1960, Evelyn married Dennis McSweeney. Shortly afterwards, they moved to the St. Nicholas of Tolentine parish in the Bronx where they raised 3 sons, Dennis (DJ), Kevin and Robert.
While raising her sons in the Bronx, Evelyn enjoyed participating in school functions, such as the Bazaar and Bingo as well as meeting with the other moms and chatting on the park benches.
In June of 1979, the family moved to Yonkers.
Every morning, Evelyn would take the bus to the city to her longtime job at Chase Manhattan Bank.
She took great pride in her job at Chase, making many more life long friends in her many years there.
Evelyn loved summer weekends and vacations on the beach in Budd Lake. She also loved to cook and to entertain, often hosting large parties of friends and relatives for holidays or just for getting together.
After more than 15 years in Yonkers, Evelyn relocated to Queens. Eventually settling in Fresh Meadows. In Fresh Meadows, she would find a whole new group of friends to sit and chat with on the park benches.
Evelyn liked to celebrate her Irish heritage. Whether it was meeting up with life long friends at the parade or going to local Irish festivals, she never misses an opportunity to wear the green.
After retiring from Chase in 2002, Evelyn continued to enjoy her hobbies of cooking and photography.
Evelyn loved to take pictures. Mostly of her grandchildren. As time went on, she became thrilled when her grandchildren would send her pictures of her great grandchildren.
Almost every conversation with Evelyn revolved around her grandchildren. Where they were, what they were doing, how they were doing. Even in her last days, the grandchildren was always the main topic.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her oldest son DJ.
She is survived by her sons Kevin and Robert.
Evelyn is also survived by her 7 grandchildren: Courtney McSweeney, Kate Papaliberios, Lindsey McSweeney, Kevin McSweeney, Matthew McSweeney, Victoria McSweeney and Ashley Diomis, and by her great grandchildren: Dominick McSweeney, Layla Papaliberios, Sofia McSweeney and Ariadne McSweeney.
Evelyn is also survived by her sister Patricia and predeceased by her brothers Thomas and James Haggerty.
Evelyn was a smart, beautiful, independent woman. She was strong willed, direct and funny.
She’s going to be missed by those who knew her and loved her.
