I miss the days I would come up to visit with the Laurel family and see Aunt Florence prepping in the kitchen with Aunt Remi for the holidays. Or the backyard parties when  she would start a line dance with my grandma, whether it was a Katy Perry song or Lady Gaga, they could dance to anything. She was a bright and caring Auntie. Love and prayers to the family and may Aunt Florence rest in peace.

To my dearest Aunt Florence,

Your memory lives on with those you’ve touched throughout your years and at age 94+, you touched a lot. We lived in a small apartment in Astoria, Queens, New York with Mom and Dad trying to make “ends-meet.” When Mom and Dad, after a long week of school at PS 122, would announce that we’re going to Aunt Florence and Uncle Roy’s house, my brothers and I would go in super excitement mode. Why? Uncle Roy and Vicki’s toys, of course. Back then, we thought they’re house to be ginormous. Sorry about the toys, Vicki. It was Ernie and Tony’s fault. We knew while we were playing in the basement, Aunt Florence and mom were cooking up something delicious. We could never pronounce the names of these dishes, but we knew it was good. My Aunt Florence would always make sure we didn’t go home hungry. When we grew older and the basement toys were no longer our obsession, it became about her and her life stories in immigrating to the US and leaving the familiarities of home behind. I particularly loved the stories she told of my Dad and Uncle Santi. Somehow, in the latter years, her stories were told more in Visaya, but even when I struggled to understand I felt her overwhelming warmth, compassion, and love. I miss you, Aunt Florence but I don’t have to look far to share a memory of you with those you’ve touched.
