I just saw the news of your dad's passing! I'm so sorry for your loss. He was such a sweet and kind man.  I'm typing this with tears in my eyes. My prayers are with you and your family. Words cannot adequately express the deep sorrow felt from losing the man that was the center of my life for the past 62 years.  A life that was filled with love and joy, hard work and sacrifice, laughter and good friends, travel and adventure. Thank you Franco for this wonderful life. Thank you for your love, for our three wonderful children and for all the memories that you created for our life together.
 
I will forever hold close in my heart the past few summers of spending hours and hours looking at old photo albums or sitting under the stars at the villa and remembering the stories of our youth. Sometimes we stayed outside until 2-3 in the morning sharing memories of a lifetime spent together, thanking God for this beautiful life and asking Him to allow us to enjoy it just a little bit longer. Making me promise never to sell the villa and to enjoy it for as long as I can.  I will do my best to keep this promise to you.
 
The time spent in Italy these past few years were the most precious. In my heart I knew that this is where you felt most alive and that it was your desire to return home to the place where you were born.  We didn't quite make it back this time, but don't worry, we will bring you home again.  Thank you for being a wonderful husband, father and friend.  You have left a huge hole in my heart but your spirit will always be alive in my heart and soul.

ti rispondo in italiano così ti eserciti nella nostra lingua (come io mi esercito nella tua). Ho aperto con successo l'album del tuo, e nostro, amato Papà. Le foto sono stupende e non ti nascondo che, malgrado io abbia un cuore duro, mi è scesa qualche lacrima di tristezza per la bellezza di un tempo che non tornerà più... Mi tornano alla memoria le sue due visite a Napoli, negli anni 50, dove ero in seminario, il suo matrimonio con mamma a Pompei, nel giugno del 1956. Allora lo sentivo come un secondo papà. E mi fermo qui, perché non riesco a frenare l'emozione e non voglio che qualcuno che mi sta vicino se ne accorga...

Capitava spesso che zio Franco arrivasse a Mola per primo,da solo,elegante nei modi e nell'aspetto,distinto,sobrio,sono state le volte in cui ho apprezzato di più l'amore per la sua terra.Sembrava inspirasse con più vigore l'aria della villa,che assaporasse con più appetito i frutti della sua terra,del suo mare.


Amava la convivialità e quel primo pranzo in sua compagnia diventava lunghissimo,i piatti si freddavano in tavola mentre i racconti si susseguivano,uno dopo l'altro si dipanavano le vicende familiari e magari si sfogliavano album fotografici.
Voleva essere reso partecipe,con vivo e sincero interesse,dei miei progressi nel lavoro e nella vita sociale,credo sia stata la prima persona a farmi sentire adulto trattandomi da adulto anche quando ancora non lo ero ,facendomi capire l'importanza delle cose e delle azioni.

E'sempre stato bello parlare col tuo Babbo,i suoi racconti di vita vissuta mi hanno sempre fatto sentire un visionario,immaginavo di vedere coi miei occhi ciò che i suoi occhi avevano visto e vissuto,gli anni della scuola Nautico a Bari,il bombardamento della città durante la guerra....Si chicchierava di tutto e la sua gioia si espandeva nei racconti della sua giovinezza e si esaltava nei racconti di famiglia.
Mi diceva spesso che ero fortunto ad avere due figlie femmine,"sarai ricoperto d'amore come me", Jeanette mi porta mazzi di fiori per dirmi che mi vuol bene...

Diceva che i genitori sono le radici di un albero che avrebbe generato rami frondosi e fiori odorosi solo se le stesse radici fossero state salde.  Voi siete i rami frondosi e i fiori odorosi generati dal suo amore e cresciuti nel suo esempio.

Spesso mi chiedeva di parlare in dialetto,veniva a Mola come Manzoni tornava a Firenze ,per  "sciacquare i panni in Arno",aveva bisogno di riappropiarsi delle sue radici e più i giorni si susseguivano più le sue radici affondavano nella terra che amava.
Era profondamente rispettoso del pensiero altrui,ascoltava assorto anche ciò che profondamente non condivideva.....ma profondamente rispettava,il suo parere non era mai posto in contraddizione ma in alternativa,con tatto ed eleganza,senza tracotanza induceva a pensare,a pensare ad un'altra via.

Non credo,nei 44 anni della mia vita,di averlo mai sentito alzare la voce,mai sentito arrabbiarsi o lamentarsi di qualcosa anche se il tempo ha messo ha dura prova la sua salute.
Era impossibile non amare quell'uomo minuto nell'aspetto ma enorme nel carisma,con una voce dolce che faceva breccia,orgoglioso delle sue figlie,della moglie,dei tanti nipoti e delle sue patrie,quella che gli ha dato i Natali e quella che gli ha permesso di realizzarsi.

Quel perfetto gentiluomo,dolce e delicato mancherà a tutti,a volte vorrei avere più fede nel Signore per riuscire ,non a sperare,ma a credere con fermezza che un giorno ci si rivedrà.
Voglio bene bene a tutte voi.

During this difficult time there are not many words, if any, that can provide the comfort and relief your heart needs. I can only let you know that your friends care and are there for you so don't carry the burdens all alone.

It is hard to imagine going through the rest of my life without daddy there; I expected you to live to be a hundred. You were there for me no matter what choices I might have made. Through your tears, you lovingly repaired my broken spirit and helped me plot a new course. There are no words to heal my broken heart.

I thank you for being the father for whom the only thing that truly mattered centered on his whole family and helping them become who they were going to be.  It is home to every memory of our younger lives and in the background of everything we were; it helped make us who we are now. There is no greater love.

We have already begun going through "The Firsts": your first birthday without you, the first Father's Day and your first wedding anniversary. The holidays without you are going to be hard to bear. Eventually I will be able to focus less on what you left behind and more on what you made possible. Goodbye, Daddy. I love you.

Dear Nonno, I was lucky enough to know you for over 27 years, and in that time I can honestly say that I can't remember you ever getting angry or being negative. You always had a big smile on your face. I can still remember you grating the cheese while calling me "tesoro." Thank you for all the joy you brought to everyone over the years. I was lucky to have you as a Nonno. You will never be forgotten!

Nonno, you were truly were such a great man & one of a kind. Even in your darkest days you also knew how to put a smile on the faces around you. Your positivity and love was always shown & is something I will always remember. I'm beyond grateful to have been able to see you one last time before you left us. Thank you for all for all the memories we shared & your constant love & support. Nonno you will always be in my heart & i will miss you forever.

Dear Nonno, I am blessed to be able to call myself your granddaughter, and I will always treasure the times we were able spend together. The openness with which you always shared your love and pride for me continues to inspire me to always strive to face the world with joy and determination untainted by cynicism.

You have taught me that a person can wander the world and plant deep roots at home.  That wisdom and decorum always leave room for smiles and silliness. Nothing can really prepare you for the loss of a parent. Regardless of age, or how much "time" you think you have, the pain of that loss permeates far deep into your heart and soul. Although I will miss you terribly Dad, I know in my heart that you knew how much I loved you and your spirit will always be with me. I find comfort thinking about the wonderful life that you've had and how many people were impacted by your kindness and love.  Until we meet again, I love you Daddy!!

Zio Franco, a man like no other. The sweetness of your heart, your noble heart, radiated wherever you were present. A true gentleman, a hard worker, the most honest man I've ever met. Your sweet smile touched everyone and filled our hearts with joy. I loved being around you, you made me feel at home, in my own home. I felt security and comfort when we were all sat around the table enjoying my moms delicious dinners and the laughter. I've learned and appreciated several things from you, and I promised myself that I will follow in your foot steps every time I will find myself in that certain situation. Zio Franco, 
In the fifty years that I'd known him that is what he was also called. It didn't matter if you were related or not, he was Zio Franco. What I will always remember about him was his graciousness and warmth in all he did. There was always a sense of order and peacefullness, contentment might be a better word. As the years passed, I got to see more and more of his hospitality and open arms as you celebrated the simplest of dinners and family gatherings to big holidays and special events. 
I remember one time in particular. It was Thanksgiving at our house and I looked over at him and Zia Mena, and saw that look of fulfillment and contentment. Here he was, looking over at his family, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and friends as if he were trying to savor the moment. He seemed to be absorbing it all, as if he wanted to open his arms wide and embrace everyone in the whole room. I pray now that he is in a place where there is no pain or suffering and I know now he is probably looking down at all of us, happy, proud, full of love and contentment, and if he could, he would wrap his arms around all of us and say it is alright. His warmth will always be in the room we call our hearts.

It's hard to believe it's been almost a month since you have been gone even though I know you will always be with me. I am thankful to have experienced so much with you over the years from building my science project together in the fourth grade, to our family trips to Arizona and Italy, to the times you would babysit Chris and I and we would walk to Burger King and play in the ball pit. 

You were always there to give a helping hand and taught me so much over the years. You also inspired me to travel the world and visit all seven continents. 

I love and miss you Nonno.

Just want to let you know, Colleen, Lynn, and I all loved your Dad, he had this inner light that shined from within and made you feel warm and comfortable from the first time you met him.

Ciao Nonno!

I will always treasure the times we got to spend together and the amazing trips we took. Laughing on the rides in Disney World and taking old time photos in Sedona are some of my best and favorite memories! 

You and Nonna will continue to inspire me to travel the world and never say no to a new opportunity. And I'm so thankful for that!

I'm still not sure I have fully wrapped my brain around the fact that my babbo is forever gone.  I couldn't have asked for a better dad.  Warm-hearted, loving & devoted.  Hardworking.  Teaching me about life not only with great advice, but by example.  Never doubting he was always there for me.  Thank you for all the sacrifices you made to give me the life I have.  How lucky am I that I got to see him everyday.  That we got to take some incredible trips together.  How grateful am I that I had the opportunity to show him everyday how much I loved him.   There is a hole in my heart now, but I will carry those memories and his spirit with me everyday.  Heaven gained a beautiful angel, but I will miss you everyday.  Until we meet again.  I Love You

In Loving Memory.  Frank Roca has been enrolled in the Association and will share forever in the Daily Masses, Prayers and Meritorious Works of the Capuchin Franciscan Friars throughout the world.

It is amazing how technology has changed the way we support each other in times of great loss. The speed in which messages came in from all over the Europe, the US and South America were heartwarming and over whelming. The number of phone calls my mom received in such a short amount of time made her feel loved and supported and gave her courage. In all of these messages, whether by phone or online, all had the same underlying tone  what a huge loss, he was such a loving, kind, compassionate and gentle soul. He was a father to more than just his 3 daughters he wasn't just Zio Franco to his nieces and nephews, he was Zio Franco to everybody. and that he was.

Despite a very difficult childhood, there is no denying that my dad lived life to the fullest. Seizing every opportunity and leaving nothing on the table. Most people can only dream of visiting half the places that my parents have been to. Places like Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Czech Republic, Hungary, Croatia, Antarctica (I mean really, who goes to Antarctica???), but always returning to their roots in Mola.  This love for life and travel will always be ingrained in the lives of his children and grandchildren, and if you've spent any time on Facebook you can already tell they are taking this responsibility very seriously. Actually I think that after reading Nonno's life story they are taking this travel thing as a challenge  can you top the places he and Nonna have already traveled to??? Challenge accepted 

My dad never complained and never gave up on life. As a matter of fact just a few days before his death he got into this discussion with my Mom because they had some family visiting from Argentina and they were invited to attend their wedding in Argentina in the fall.  When they asked my dad if they would attend the wedding my dad to turned to my mom and said If you feel up to it I want to go, what about you?  My mom turned to him and said If I feel up to it? You are the one that is sick with a feeding tube! If you feel up to it, of course I want to go!  Never passing up an opportunity to live life.

When talking with his grandkids the past few days one of the comments that kept coming up was that Nonno never said no to anything you asked of him.  Whether it be attending an activity at school or sporting event, dressing up in costume, eating fried ice cream or riding Splash Mountain at Disney World a few years ago. he never said no.  Never passing up an opportunity to live life.

Although I have to say that some of us made this living life easier than others.
There is no question that my dad was patient and compassionate man, some even called him a saint.  For years he had to endure the constant brainwashing and emotional torture from his youngest daughter Jeanette.  Years of trying to get him to admit on video that she was the best and the favorite (although I don't see her standing up here with me)  The first thing she would do every day when she got home from work is throw open the front door and yell out, "It's OK, Jeanette is home now.  Everything is going to be OK."  Then she would walk over to the recliner he was sitting in, give him a few kisses, hold his hand, look him in the eyes and ask softly, "Did mommy hit you today?"  Then she would pretend to check his arms and legs.  He would always roll his eyes and say "No, not today."

My cousin Gianluigi summarizes my father the best.  He describes my dad as a man elegant in manner and appearance, distinguished, and wise.  A man who had a great love for his home land and was vigorously inspired and renewed just breathing deep the air of the villa in Mola, savoring the fruits of his land and of the sea. Zio Franco was the first person to make me feel like an adult, always interested in my life and making me realize the importance of things and actions. Through the years we spent many nights sharing stories that made me feel like a visionary. I imagined to see with my own eyes what his eyes had seen and experienced, the years of the Nautical School in Bari, the bombing of the city during the war, life as a father with 3 daughters. With each passing story of his youth his joy expanded and was exalted in the stories of his family and his children. He said that parents are the roots of a tree that would generate leafy branches and fragrant flowers only if the same roots had been firm. Children are the leafy branches and fragrant flowers generated by that love and grow in his example.

Gianluigi continued to say that Zio Franco was the person that everyone went to for advice, very respectful of other people's thoughts. Always listening carefully to the details of what was shared, but also what was left unshared. His advice would never be forced upon you but offered as an alternative with tact and elegance, without arrogance. I do not think I ever heard him raise his voice, ever feel angry or complain about anything, even when time put a strain on his health.

It was impossible not to love this man, small in appearance but huge in charisma, with a sweet voice which penetrated, proud of his wife, his daughters, many grandchildren and his homeland. That gentleman, sweet and delicate will be missed by all. Sometimes I wish I had more faith in the Lord to succeed, not to hope, but to believe firmly that one day we will meet again.

My dad had two favorite sayings: Con la vita ce sempre speranza (where there's life there's always hope) and Veni, Vidi, Vici, I came, I saw, I conquered and that he did!

Just happened to see a post about Franco's passing. Please accept my sincerest condolences. He was a fine "Gentle" man. It was a pleasure to know him. Tony and I followed their journeys on FB. We enjoyed seeing them so happy with the family. Unfortunately, my beloved husband passed on March 5th. My heart goes out to all of you knowing how difficult it is for your mom and all the family. We thank God for the blessing he has bestowed on us and our family and treasure the years we had together. Rest in Peace Franco. May God comfort all the family.

Just wanted to say how sorry I am for the loss of your dad. I have such nice memories of going over to have lunch with your parents and your mom would make these incredible Italian dishes, NO SPAGHETTI and MEATBALLS!! She made these awesome dishes that made you feel like you were eating in Italy. Your dad was such a nice man and had such wonderful qualities, always a happy person. May he rest in peace and may your family treasure all the wonderful memories that you have. Saying some prayers for your family. God bless your dad!!!
