Genevieve Guido, age 80, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 7, 2022, with beautiful memories and prayers and the support of her family and healthcare team. She was a loving wife, mother, Nana, great Nana, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend.
Gen was born September 19, 1941 to Augustus and Rose Costaldo and raised in Flushing, Queens, NY, to be compassionate, self-reliant and dependable. Those traits served her well throughout life and when, at the age of 17, she married her childhood sweetheart, Louis J Guido Jr, beginning their life together in Norfolk, VA where Lou was completing his service in the U.S. Marine Corps. Upon starting their family by welcoming their son, Louis III, into their lives, Gen and Lou returned to Flushing where their daughter, Lorraine, was born two years later. Being close to family and friends provided the support and opportunities for treasured memories as they made their way to Port Jefferson and onto Cutchogue, NY near her in-laws and other relatives where an abundance of new memories were made.
Gen’s closest connections growing up and into adulthood were her siblings and cousins, Lou’s family and their Flushing neighborhood friends with whom they spent their lifetime building memories together before, during and after raising their families. Gen also cherished a few very special friends she met through her work.
In 1986, after their children settled into adult life, Gen and Lou moved to Florida and lived in several communities (Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, Lakewood Park and Hutchinson Island) over the years. Wherever Gen lived, she was a gracious host welcoming visits from family and friends.
Gen’s work in her early married life was primarily to help support her family through part time employment. That path changed for her as she began her work in Community Relations at Eastern Long Island Hospital. At 40 years of age, she earned the unique opportunity to attend college to earn a bachelor’s degree through the union’s sponsorship program. In 1985, Gen graduated with summa cum laude honors with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Services Administration from CUNY – Lehman College. She went on to dedicate the rest of her full-time career through age 77 to helping families in need. She was employed over the past 35 years first at Children's Home Society in West Palm Beach and then Children's Services Council of Martin County from which she retired in 2019. Her mission as a Director of Finance and Human resources for these not-for-profit children and family organizations was to create a fiscally responsible environment which provided fair and compassionate support for both employees and the communities they served. Gen worked hard to be a team player and enjoyed knowing that her work benefitted families in need.
Gen was blessed this past year with special celebrations and memories with her family, especially her 80th birthday and her granddaughter's wedding preparation and bridal shower.
Gen was predeceased by the love of her life, Lou, to whom she was married for 61 years and her sister, Lorraine. She will be cherished and remembered as a loving mother to Louis J. Guido, III of Blacksburg, VA and Lorraine and Paul Mazzo of Fairfield, CT and a loving and nurturing Nana to Raven, Marisa & Kelly and great Nana Gen to Zuri, Zara, and Oakley. She will be deeply missed by her siblings Rosemarie, Maryann (Nick), and Gus (Liz), nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Throughout Gen’s adult life, her most treasured role was being a mother and Nana. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren brought her an infinite amount of joy, which was evident in the many trips she made up north to attend events and her remembering every holiday and important milestone through her cards, thoughtful gifts and phone calls. The tradition she created with her family’s visits to FL will be forever embedded in their minds and hearts.
Visitation will be held August 26, 2022, 3:00-7:00pm at Quinn - Fogarty Funeral Home, 192-15 Northern Boulevard, Flushing, NY 11358. Funeral mass will be Saturday, August 27, 2022 9:30am at St Ann's Church, 58-02 146th Street, Flushing, NY 11355.
