She leaves behind her devoted husband of 54 years, Dimitrios Chresomales, her daughters Potoula and Emmy, and her precious granddaughter Simone Elena. She also leaves behind her loving siblings in Greece - Maria, Niko, and Spiro – and many close relatives in the U.S. and Greece.
Helen’s life was centered around her family and friends, and her faith. She attended St. Demetrios Church in Jamaica, Queens. She was an active member in her community and joyfully attended the Anavryti Society dances, the Greek Independence Day parade, St D. New Year's Eve parties, many Philoptochos luncheons, and loved any festival with Greek music, dancing, and loukoumades. She had a big smile for everyone, that we will all miss.
She loved vacationing in Clearwater Beach, Florida, and Aruba and swimming in the ocean. Her favorite vacation was a family trip to Aruba to celebrate her 80th birthday and her husband’s 85th birthday with her children and granddaughter.
Helen and her husband traveled to many places together – Hawaii, Italy, France, England, the Caribbean, Aruba, Las Vegas, Florida, Bahamas, Canada – and really enjoyed going home to Sparta, Greece, to visit their relatives.
She played cards with her husband often and enjoyed a good game (especially if she was winning!). She spent many happy hours in her garden caring for her roses, gardenias, hibiscus plants, and making the home beautiful for everyone. She had a vegetable garden and could feed an army with her tomatoes, cucumbers, and eggplants. Helen took great pride in her home and loved entertaining and cooking huge meals for the family.
She was the heart of the home, the driving force in her family’s lives. Her love for her children was fierce and unconditional and they felt that love every day with phone calls, home-cooked meals (“I made your favorite: roasted chicken and potatoes!”), homemade soup when they were sick, a request to “call when you get home,” and a genuine open invitation for them to move back home at any time. Her children always knew they had a home and someone who would love to take care of them.
Helen was a strong Spartan woman who worked hard her entire life. As an immigrant from Greece, she believed in the American dream and sacrificed with her husband to give her daughters a home, a good education, and every opportunity. She died after a courageous battle with rheumatic heart disease. Most people with this disease do not live that long but she took excellent care of herself and her health and she made it to her 80s and her family is grateful to God for being blessed with her for so long. We will miss her every day. May she rest in peace and may her memory be eternal.
A visitation for Helen will be held Thursday, June 29, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Frederick Funeral Home, 192-15 Northern Boulevard, Flushing, NY 11358. A funeral service will occur Friday, June 30, 2023 from 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Demetrios G.O. Church, 84-35 152nd Street, Queens, NY 11432.
