Hernando Ramirez, 73, passed away on July 10, 2019 in his Valley Stream home. Born on June 4, 1946 in Barranquilla, Colombia, he was the son of Sixto Ramirez and Maria Isabel Buitrago. At age 15, Hernando came to the United States with his family and was proud to become an American citizen. For nearly 30 years he was an officer of the US Customs and Border Protection division of Homeland Security until his retirement in 2012. For many years, Hernando was an active soccer player and early member of the Hota soccer club in NY. He also was a volunteer coach of various school teams on Long Island. In addition to soccer, he was an avid fan of teams such as the New York Mets and the Florida Gators. He is survived by his daughter, Jill Ramirez, and grand-daughter, Madison, in Greenwich, CT; his sister, Martha Percival, in France; his half-sisters, Juliana and Carolina Ramirez and their mother Elena, in Colombia, and his stepson, Cristian Hernandez, in Valley Stream, NY. A funeral mass will be held at Mary’s Nativity – St. Ann Parish on Saturday, July 20th at 9:45 a.m., followed by the burial at Mount Saint Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, both in Flushing, NY. Donations in his memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
