August 15, 1909 – March 4, 2020
Aida Asunta Del Pizzo was born in Taranta Peligna, Abruzzi, Italy on August 15, 1909, the third daughter of Giuseppe and Giuseppina Del Pizzo. After the family had moved to New York and she started attending school, “Aida” became “Ida” as part of an effort to Americanize immigrant children, and it was this young woman who entered the work force after eighth grade to help provide for the family.
In 1934, she married Paul Albert (formerly Albergo), and in 1941 gave birth to their son Frank Paul Albert. Their daughter Lorraine Marie Albert was born in 1944. They lived in Astoria, Queens in close proximity to other family members. Their dream was to own a house, though, and in 1964 they moved to 220th Street in Bayside, Queens, where Ida remained for fifty-six years.
In that time, Lorraine married and moved to Seattle, Washington, and then Denver, Colorado, and had two children of her own. Frank married and moved to neighboring Douglaston, Queens so he could always be nearby. The years marched on. Paul passed away on July 8, 1983, a few months shy of their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Frank passed as well, too early, on April 29, 1990. Ida began making regular visits to Colorado to spend time with Lorraine. In 2008, when she was 99 years old, her doctor advised her to stop travelling after a medical emergency occurred during one of her trips to Colorado.
Ida remained at home for almost all of her last decade. She received excellent personalized attention from her caretakers Kathy, Margaret, Maureen, and Mary, as well as Sister Kathleen and visitors from Sacred Heart Church. Although she and Lorraine had always prioritized travel to see each other, her daughter made even more frequent trips to New York to be as present as possible in Ida’s day to day life.
Shortly after her 110th birthday, Ida made the difficult decision to move to Colorado to be close to Lorraine. She spent her last four months with her daughter nearby and getting to know her great-grandchildren, Haku and Aïda. On Tuesday, March 3, Ida fell into a deep sleep and could not be roused. Nearby family was gathered, a priest was called for the Anointing of the Sick, and at approximately 10:30pm on Wednesday, March 4, Ida Albert passed peacefully from this world.
She is survived by Lorraine Albert (daughter), Todd Marzano (grandson), Taya Marzano (great-granddaughter), Christine Haystead (granddaughter), and Haku and Aïda Haystead (great-grandchildren).
Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma, you cannot imagine how much you are missed. We will always love you.
