Dear Aunty Ihuoma, even though you are no longer with us physically, your spiritual presence is felt very keenly and no day passes when I do not remember you or think of you in some way. I miss your jokes, your gentle teasing, your laughter and warm advice, your selflessness in all aspects of relating with your family, friends and others. You were a rare gem and I hope you are finally resting in peace in the bosom of Abraham, where we shall meet one day to part no more. I love you , but I guess God loves you more. RIP!!!!!!

Dear Aunty Ihuoma, as painful as it is to say goodbye, we take solace in the fact that you are finally free from pain, worries and the cares of this life. I pray for strength and comfort for the loved ones you left behind who must now rise to the challenge of making you proud with the way they move on with life now in your absence. Aunty Ihuoma, your death has been so hard for me to accept because you have always been so full of life. Only time and God's grace can fill the vacuum your death has left in all our hearts but your memory will never die as long as I am alive. 

How can I forget the love and concern you have always shown to me? How can I forget how much you would spoil me whenever I came to Nigeria? I will always remember you patiently following me while I wondered around Aba market simply because you knew what it meant to me. I can't forget the deep conversations we had when you briefly stayed with me in Toronto and I had the opportunity to return the favour: accompanying you while you wondered through Chinatown and Honest Ed's shopping for odds and ends. How can I forget the genuine warmth in your voice whenever you called from Nigeria to check up on me, always jokingly pronouncing my name with an exaggerated American accent? Even when I last saw you in London, already beginning to waste away, you were still concerned with making sure I was comfortable. 

Aunty Ihuoma, you lived a selfless life of compromise and compassion. Our only disagreement was that you worried too much and I was afraid of the impact all that worrying would have on your health. You always worried about your children and about family in general because you truly wanted the best for everybody. You worried so much about us that we were completely caught unaware when the tables suddenly turned and we now had to worry about losing you forever. The time has now come for you to worry no more and also for us to put our worries aside for you are in a better place. Rest assured your exalted memory will  never fade nor tarnish. One day I will proudly tell my two nieces (and hopefully my future children too) about my beloved Aunty Ihuoma. Thank you for being a shining example of love and kinship.

                                              A Daughter's Tribute

We thank you father, for your mercies. 
I don't know how many people leave this earth the way our mother did. She was much loved and precious to many. It was amazing and I feel it only points to the kind of person she was. When people who knew you from childhood, people who have known you for many decades are interested in you and in your best interests and welfare, then you must have done something good. An old school friend of mine, in her tribute to mummy, wrote, “She was the only one of my mum's friends who visited her in hospital when she was sick”. Her mum was sick and apparently dying. Mummy traveled to visit her friend and till today my friend remembers it. She called me as soon as she got the news of mum's passing. Shortly after that her sister, who lives in France called me as well. 
Yes, mummy had her flaws, but who doesn't? She was the type of mother whom her children's friends called mummy! Her children's friends ultimately became friends with her. She was a very free and open person. She and my husband were really close. They talked like mother and son. They would have discussions and make plans with or without me being around. They never had a misunderstanding, not for even one day, no, not for even one second. And I believe that she would have been friends with my siblings spouses too if she would have been in the future! Well, yes it helps that I have a reasonable husband too. My husband really loved mummy and it is a lucky man who has with his mother-in-law the type of relationship mine did with mum. 
Her friends'workers, the same. For real! Was anyone hungry? Her kitchen was a public kitchen. Anybody could always count on being fed if they happened to reach her house. From former house helps to former students she had taught ages ago, to complete strangers who might have accompanied a visitor, to the visitor's driver who might be sitting out in the car, .. you could certainly count on getting, not just a meal, but a well made and tasty meal. She was a good, good cook. Even when she was visiting me. I'm not that patient and I confess I'm not always ready or willing to play with the pots! Whenever I had any visitor and mum was around, they must be fed. She would get busy in the kitchen and sure enough, come out with something. And this is the absolute truth.
She was also always concerned about anybody who had a problem. She may not have been able to solve it, it may not have been in her power but she certainly would not turn a deaf ear or as some people do, pretend that you had never mentioned the problem and she would certainly try, try to see what she could do about it, even if only by making suggestions. A cousin of hers who saw her during her illness, shortly before she passed kept repeating over and over to me and I knew it was true too - your mother was always concerned about my progress, always worrying, always calling to find out how I was doing. I have finally made it and am doing well now. I cannot believe that I cannot show her property that my wife and I have acquired, I cannot believe that I cannot tell her of all that we have been blessed with now.
So, I say again, when your relations who have known you forever, when your old friends from youthful days still care and are concerned about you, you must have done something good. Mum was surrounded by the loving presence and comfort of so many people for days before and even on the day she passed. And even after her passing people were still taking the pains to travel. We had relations travel from so many places, flying in, coming on buses, trains, etc Let me just paint the picture for you… On the day she passed her bed was surrounded with relations who had come from far and near, there were those who were watching on skype too. The room/air was filled with singing of hymns, praying and comforting words…it seemed like a gathering of angels in a room. There was also a minister who prayed for her. Guess what? Soon after he prayed and left, mummy “started to pass on”, just like that! We literally observed the passing. And it was so peaceful. Yes, it was painful, to some us I'm sure, surreal. But in retrospect it could not have been better… we really wouldn't have had it happen any other way. 

We thank you Father, for our mother, Ihuoma Marvel. She sacrificed greatly, managing to do all that she did, much of the time on her own. Indeed she was true to her names:
Ihuoma - (Interpretation-beautiful face) our beautiful mother! Anyone who knew our mother knows that she was a beauty queen! She seemed totally oblivious to her looks. Even as in later years, she seemed to me, to be careless about herself and always ready to sacrifice her comfort, to the point of exhaustion,  and even as I begged her so many times to stop and slow down, she still remained a beauty.

Marvel - I always marveled at how she did all that she did. Every single day of her life our mum worked long hours both as a teacher and as a mum and later as a grandmum.. Many times I got really upset with her. I was often frustrated trying to get her to keep in mind that every human has a limit. Was there anything that her husband or a child of hers needed? She would take any pain to make it happen. It just seemed like she totally forgot she wasn't super human. I had given up lecturing her on this but I couldn't take it when she still wouldn't stop even at the very end! In all honesty I lost my temper when, on her hospital bed, mustering all the strength she could, she fought with me even though extremely weak, as she physically tried to wrestle her phone from my hands because she was trying to make calls and arrangements for the comfort of my sister and her kids. I could not believe it, I was exasperated! “At this point”, I said to her, “you should try to be concerned only about yourself now”. But old habits die hard; it had become a part of her. Of course I didn't hand over the phone!

Indeed, mummy was a backbone to many and to much. At times she fearlessly undertook the role of mother to the motherless; never fearing that her attempt to help could be misinterpreted or backfire. She was a warrior, in a way, for want of words, a man-woman! I have no idea where or how she found the strength and time to do many things she undertook. 
I kind of feel like I enjoyed her best… always looking good, she was a well mannered and well spoken lady; I tell my siblings this as well, as I watched her gradually change over the years. As a child I always seemed to look like I was in my Sunday best, with my hair forever prettified with ribbons and I had all that a little girl could ask for. I'm still trying meet those standards with my own children. I remember her teaching me nursery rhymes and poems and all the art books she bought me as a little child. From a very tender age she registered me with an art club - The tortoise club, in Enugu, where I participated in all sorts of art presentations, both live and on television. She would always make out the time to take me there and those days she wasn't even driving…we went by taxi..Oh yes, I remember, even as far back as when I was 4. My childhood and my mum's response to dealing with finances played a big part in shaping me into whom I have become today. She was a VERY industrious woman. As a young girl I noticed that in combination with her teaching job, she was always doing one form of business or the other. I can't say how many times that has helped me. Anytime I have found it necessary to make adjustments for financial reasons I have always found some sort of business to engage in. While at the University, when broke, while some other students resorted to “aristos” or whatever else to survive, I made cards and bought t-shirts and sold them. This instinct has and will remain with me forever, and I enjoy it and take pride in it! Even my husband entrusted and discussed certain decisions that pertained to finances with her. Thank you mum, my childhood was an absolute blessing. By the grace of our ever merciful God, you are in heaven with Him, and looking down and patting yourself on the shoulder. Oh yes, you did good!
And now, people are gathering; they will make it to say their goodbyes. It is still hard to believe that as strong as we knew you to be, you're truly no more with us. People are saying the same thing!
Mummy has left a gaping hole. She took care of so many things that I'm LITERALLY afraid of her absence now! To my brothers and sisters, I say, it is not, it cannot be business as usual! 

And for all you mothers reading this, may God bless each of you and give you strength and encouragement in raising your own children.

Death dealt my family a terrible blow.  In the words of my daughter Chinwenma on the death of aunty Ihuoma, "It is not fair!"

My most beautiful sister, you were a hardworking wife and a loving mother, who sacrificed so much to ensure the well-being and comfort of the members of your family.  You also did not hesitate to assist the less privileged around you.  How I wish that you lived longer to enjoy the fruits of your labour.  I trust that the Almighty God who decided to call you home has  received you into his bosom.

Aunty Ihuoma,

Words truly fail me at this moment. It has taken me quite some time to come to terms that you are truly gone. When I learnt you were sick, I truly believed that you will pull through because I have always known you to be a very strong woman, full of vigor and life. I know you were determined to fight and fight you did till the last day.  I never imagined not seeing you again. My mother had gone to visit you at your sick bed in Port Harcourt and she had called me so that I could speak with you. Oh, little did I know it was my only and last chance to wish you strength and courage as you underwent treatment. I looked forward to Thanksgiving, which was  November 28th, 2013; because I knew I was coming to see you and wish you strength but unfortunately that never came to pass as you left us as we all gathered by your side as family. You passed on peacefully as we prayed over you. Although  you are physically gone, you will forever remain etched in our hearts 
We have taken comfort knowing that you are with your  Creator. Aunty Ihuoma, Go in peace.

Ivuoma my cousin was a bundle of humour. We were together for four years at the Union Secondary School Ibiaku. As fate would have it, we in our adult years ended up living in Port Harcourt. Although we did not see each other every single week, each time we were together we knew that the same blood ran through our veins.
On one of those meetings, she announced that Chima was on transfer to the North and then true to character, Ivuoma sought my opinion on the fact that Chima was not agitating to come back to the south. Everyone she knew from our own part of the country would protest against such transfer but not Chima. She asked me to wonder or query whether Chima was just enjoying his work or something else? We could not stop laughing.
Now, when she was about to graduate from the Rivers State College of Education, loving husband, Chima, had packaged a surprise London vacation for Ivuoma. When she got wind of it she said to me, “Poor Chima, amahukwanu namu adana”. “Are the results out? I asked her. “No, she replied, Nne, exam ahu tara akpu.”
When I spoke to her in July, 2013 I got the impression that her illness was quite grave but I nursed the hope that she would pull through. When I visited her in November at the Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York city, I became worried. Shortly after that, the unthinkable happened.
Ivuoma, my memory of you will not be you on a sick bed but will be the fun conversations we always shared. And now, there is no more sickness and no more pain, JUST PEACE, until we meet to part no more. May your gentle soul rest in perfect peace.

I struggle with words to express how I felt when I heard you had passed. To me you were not only an auntie and a close friend of my mum's but also someone I could speak to and confide in over intimate issues and challenges for guidance and prayers. 
I will always fondly remember all the good times we spent together, your laugh and how your eyes sparkle when you smile. You were a beautiful woman inside and out and a loss to our family also.
Auntie please forgive me for refusing to remember how bad things were at the end. I choose to celebrate your life and the impact you made on mine.
I bless God for letting you see and help to raise your grandchildren. I pray that you look down at us with a smile and continue to intercede for us from heaven. I know it's not goodbye forever and if I never said so enough, I want you to know I love you.

I and Ihuoma were very good friends before and after college.  I knew her to be a highly good natured lady, very intelligent, well groomed and articulated.  Boldness was part of her personality as she would look at your face and tell you what she wants to tell you and would end it with a laughter.  She was so eloquent in speech with a classical command of English language and this unique traits made her feature so well in college debates.  We shared common goals and achieved almost all God wanted us to achieve. She spent most of her holidays with me at Umuawa Alaocha, being my hometown.  One of my classmates nicknamed me "The boy is good", because Chima my brother will always write that on the envelops of his letters to me, and Ihuoma who was in a different class(Z) joined in on it, little did she know that this boy is good would eventually become her husband; a marriage God blessed with five beautiful children.  I so wished that death would have allowed you to live and eat the fruit of your labor.  Let us rest our consolation on the fact that God allowed it to happen and who are we to challenge His Majesty. Fare thee well my dear Ihuoma and may the God of peace and joy grant you His everlasting rest in His glorious kingdom in Jesus name, Amen!

Aunty Ihu as we all fundly called you, ever so cheerful,  happy, and so much fun to be with even to the end. I remembered visiting you at my big Sisters place just before your journey to the States for your treatment, you where in so much pain but yet had the presence of mind to admire what I was wearing and at the same time tease Uncle on almost everything. Aunty you where such a strong fighter that I believed it was not the Cancer but Gods time to call you home. If that be the case, let us all be consoled that you are in a better place now with your maker. Like the book of Ecclesiastes 3:1-end has given us hope. May we all run our race believing that when the time comes, we all shall be remembered by the good works we have done. Adieu Aunty, sleep well. .. until we meet to part no more. Amen.

Dear auntie, the news of your passing on came with with great shock. I heard you fought a good fight against the mighty cancer. You did not lose the battle but you are merely continuing your life as a spiritual being who has completed its earthly experience. Now you are in the glorious beyond, a place for the Communion of Saints. There you will fellowship with fellow departed souls and you will feel NO MORE PAINS. May the almighty bless your soul kindly, just as you treated everyone of us who had the opportunity of meeting you. We pray for your family though now bereaved but are thanking the Lord for the chance of incarnating with you in this lifetime and you being the loving wife, mother and grand mother that you were.

The bible says : Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted. Words can just not express the loss and emptiness you feel inside. Take comfort in knowing that she is an angel with god now and will forever continue to watch over her loved ones. Aunty the Aunty, you wanted so much good for your children. We would talk endlessly, same wishes and dreams every time. You were a great grandmum! Even in the middle of Winter, you would go do the school run. Having you around in London was like having another mum. This year was a roller coaster year for all of us. First your 65th birthday, we surprised you and danced all night. Then you helped us plan my parents 40th anniversary in April, you still danced away the night. Then i visit & you start complaining about health issues, we prayed and prayed and prayed. Then it was time for Chemo and you said "Uloma retouch my hair at least let me carry good hair before we start it oh" I told you not to bother but you insisted as you wanted to have nice hair. You do have beautiful rich hair. We talked and talked and hoped for the best. Towards the what I hoped would not be the end, I became a coward. I stopped calling, all I wanted was to hear there is an improvement. I wanted only the good memories. People have always said I shy away from bad news! I am so very sorry. I fear to console, I only keeping hoping and hoping and hoping. Aunty I know you are in heaven that is what gives me consolation. I pray that all the things that you wished for will come to pass! We miss you, even the kids. I know I never told you how much you meant but I hope my actions did let you know that I cared. Bye Aunty, I pray that I will be ready when I am called just like you. Bless your family and may God help them cope with this tragedy. Amen.

I feel your loss keenly, but it is well, rest in perfect peace in the bossom of Abraham until we meet to part no more.

We remember Mrs. Ihuoma Oji for her straightforwardness and honest comments on matters in the large Okereke family. We will miss her very dearly. May we all in the Okereke family and the Oji family console one another on this great loss. To her siblings, children and husband, we say 'Kawo nu', 'Ndo nu' and we pray that she will rest eternally in perfect peace in the Lord's bossom.

 We sympathize with the Orji Family of Umuahia and the Okereke Family of Arondizuogu on the passing on of Lady Ihuoma who is equally dear and fondly cherished by them as by us.
