There was the day that Aunt Irene and Uncle Ed were married. I was thrilled that she asked me to be her flower girl and thus a member of the wedding party. Following the recessional from the church on the way to the photography studio and reception hall, I was seated in the limousine exclusively with the newly married couple. Uncle Ed turned to her, took her hand, and with a big grin, remarked “Well, we’re married!”
A couple of years later while I was in elementary school. My brother Greg, then a pre-schooler, had a modeling job or interview in NYC that ended by mid-day. Accompanied by Greg and myself in the car, my mother Genevieve picked up Aunt Blanche (both my mother’s and Uncle Ed’s sister), and we drove to Aunt Irene’s home to make kielbasa from scratch. Prior to our arrival, Aunt Irene must have obtained the ingredients from the local shopkeepers catering to east European tastes in the area. There we were, my mother, Aunt Blanche, Aunt Irene and her mom, seasoning the meat and stuffing into the casings! Well, it was delicious, and my memories are fond of it because it is a traditional family treat that we would rarely eat today. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn about making this very occasional delight, amid the mentoring of Aunt Irene and her mom.
