With hearts full of both gratitude and sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Jean Charlotte Serrant Cright (née Yearwood) who passed away peacefully at the age of 91— unafraid and with an adventurer’s heart.
Jean was a woman of extraordinary beauty, strength, and grace. Guided by her life motto, “I go to meet my good,” and led by an open heart, she inspired us to approach every challenge and opportunity with courage, optimism and grace.
Jean is survived by her beloved daughters, Donna and Beverly; her cherished nieces Melissa and Jennifer; and treasured nephews Anthony, Chuck, Anthony and Gregory. She was preceded in death by her son, Anthony; her parents, Sylvia and Frederick; her sisters Monica and Ann; her brother, Charles; and her husbands, Hilton and George.
A tireless advocate for education, Jean earned a Nursing Degree in Trinidad & Tobago. After continuing her studies in the United States, she received a Bachelor’s Degree from St. Francis College and went on to pursue a Master’s Degree at Adelphi University.
Jean’s compassionate nature and training led to a nursing career that spanned more than 50 years. She began as a district nurse in Laventille, Trinidad & Tobago, before continuing her professional journey in New York as a Nursing Administrator. At Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center – David S. Minkin Rehabilitation Center, she advanced to Director of Nursing. She later served as Nursing Vice President at Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center and subsequently as Nursing Administrator at Susan Smith McKinney Rehabilitation Center and Nursing Home.
Jean was passionate about faith, politics, the arts, the New York Mets and her family. Warm-hearted, generous and witty, she brought joy and light to everyone around her. Her memory will remain a blessing in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
The service is scheduled for 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 10th at Queen of Peace, 141-36 77th Avenue, Flushing, NY 11367 with final interment at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery in Oxford, FL.
The family would like to thank Dr. Daniel Byrns for his unwavering care and advocacy on behalf of our mother. For the last decade of her life, he was her devoted champion and steadfast supporter.
We also extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Mariam, our mother’s devoted health care attendant, whose selfless dedication was an inspiration to us all.
