Joan was born to the late Michael and Catherine Campbell, nee Staunton, April 11, 1929, in Woodside, Queens, the fourth of six children. They were a loving, devoted family that traveled to Ireland to visit family and spent summers in Bayville, Long Island and Highland Lake, Winsted, Connecticut. Joan graduated from Our Lady of Wisdom Academy, Ozone Park, NY in 1947 and attended Katherine Gibbs secretarial school. In her early career, she was employed by The Standard Oil Company. After devoting twenty four years to raising her four children and many rewarding volunteer positions, she enjoyed seventeen years of employment at St John’s University where she worked in both the Economics and Public Relations Departments planning events for the University. She received a personal letter of gratitude from President Ronald Reagan for her work in planning his visit in 1985.
Joan is survived by her children: Charles Paulos of New York, NY, Kevin Paulos of Flushing, NY, and Catherine Shea of North Haledon, NJ, as well as her daughter in law Margot Paulos of East Meadow, NY. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Daniel Paulos, Sarah Shea, Katie Shea and Liam Shea, and her brother Michael and eight nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her son, Daniel Paulos in 2007 and her siblings, Mary, Patricia, Charles and William Campbell, as well as a large loving and extended family in both NY and Ireland.
Family, friends and church were the centerpieces of Joan’s life. Her great pleasure was travel. She visited many destinations with family, friends and her beloved brother Bill. She enjoyed her annual trips to Ireland where she spent time with relatives. She treasured her purchases from around the world. Joan took great pride in being a New Yorker. She enjoyed theater, Opera, music and dancing. She had a special place in her heart for babies and children. Joan was an active member of many church groups and in her later years was active in AARP and St Kevin’s Seniors Group.
A wake will be held on Friday, May 3, 2019 at Fredericks Funeral Home, 192-15 Northern Blvd, Flushing from 2pm to 5pm and from 7pm to 9pm. A funeral mass to celebrate her life will be held at Mary's Nativity Church, Flushing, on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at 9:45am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. The family wishes to express its deep gratitude to many caretakers and friends who were devoted to Joan in her later years.
