John Lee Harris, known to his loved ones as "Kirkey" or simply "Kirk," was born on February 27, 1941, in New York City to Robert Lee Harris and Naomi Jefferson. He was the cherished youngest of two children in this loving family. His mother, Naomi Stirrup, remains an extraordinary presence in his life, celebrating her 103rd year while residing comfortably at home. Kirk and his mother shared a uniquely deep bond—one that endured and grew with time, strengthening both of their spirits.
John received his early education in the New York City school system, later continuing his studies at Pace College in NYC. A young man of drive and ambition, he enlisted in the United States Army in the early 1950s, serving his country with honor for four years. During his service, John’s natural charisma and love of performance shone brightly as he joined the Army's boxing team and formed a singing group a passion he would carry with him for life.
Kirk's love for music was nothing short of legendary among family and friends. He performed with several singing groups throughout his life, most notably "Richard Blandon and the Dubs." As the group's talented tenor, he was part of their number-one hit, "Could This Be Magic," a song that those of the time recall quite vividly when the first few notes of the baritone blare. John's voice echoed through subway stations, on street corners, and in the basements of friends’ homes as he and his friends sang doo-wop into the night—a beloved hobby of New York teens during that era, creating a rhythm that defined an entire generation upon the downtown Brooklyn streets.
By the early 1960s, John settled in Brooklyn, New York, where he began building his career. He initially worked as an Electrical Assembler at B & L Lamp Company, yet he continued to aim higher. Returning to his studies at Pace College for Business administration, John eventually transitioned into the insurance industry, working for New York Life and later Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. Known for his dedication, he received several awards for his exemplary work ethic. His professional journey took him further to Wall Street, where he worked as a commodities broker—a testament to his versatility and ambition.
In the late 1990s, John’s compassionate spirit led him to volunteer at local hospitals with hospice, offering comfort and spiritual support to those facing life's final transitions. His presence brought solace to patients and their families during profoundly difficult times, embodying the care and kindness that defined him.
For over 40 years, John and Renee shared a profound and enduring love, a bond that was as gentle as it was unbreakable. Renee was not only his partner but his soul’s companion, standing by him through life’s many seasons with unwavering devotion. Together, they faced life’s challenges, with Renee at his side through every trial. Through his battles with Prostate cancer, Renal cell carcinoma, and, in 2019, a devastating stroke, Renee was his devoted caregiver, the light that guided him, and the heart that kept him going. Her presence was his greatest strength, helping him endure with resilience and grace.
After a courageous battle with illness, John peacefully transitioned at home on Saturday, November 2, 2024, surrounded by love and the legacy of a life well-lived.
