Josephine A. Percivalle, a life-long resident of New York City died on Sunday, September 17, 2023. She was 95 years old and had just celebrated her birthday with friends and family this past July 27. Josephine is survived by her husband, Anthony Percivalle, 98, her twins Joseph and Rosanne Percivalle, 64, three grandchildren, Anthony, 40, Laura, 33, and Joseph, 26, and one great grandchild, Nathaniel, 8. She grew up in Corona, NY and moved to Flushing in 1962 with her husband and children.
Her father immigrated from Sicily and her mother, also of Italian decent was born in NYC in 1890. She had one brother and two sisters and they were a family of entrepreneurs and hard workers.
Her father purchased a building in Corona, which housed his Italian American Grocery market, and they lived in the upper floors. She was quite close to her dad but he died when she was only 12.
Her mother also worked in the store but her real talent and work was as a seamstress who sewed wedding gowns. Josephine was creative and talented as well and had a great eye for decorating, fashion and for gardening. She was always happy, willing to help others and she did it with a smile on her face. Even in the past months, she would say I am fine, but how are you? if someone asked.
Jo enjoyed spending time at home with her loving husband of 70 years, cooking (they still have the same stove purchased in 1964 which looks brand new), traveling, dancing and listening to music.
She was funny and stylish and kept up with current events daily. She put family first and was a caregiver to her own mother and sisters, taking them into her home at the end of their lives. She assumed custody of her special needs niece, Maryann, for over 20 years with regular visits and monetary responsibilities until she died of covid in 2020. Mom was by then 92 years old.
She and her husband attended mass every Sunday and were parishioners of St. Kevin for over 50 years. Her loving heart will be missed . A poet once said “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." She had a great life, a full life and we were blessed to have her.
A mass of christian burial for Josephine will be held Thursday, September 21, 2023 from 10:45 AM to 11:45 AM at St. Kevin R.C. Church, 45-21 194th Street, Flushing, NY 11358. Following the mass of christian burial will be an interment from 12:45 PM to 1:00 PM at St. John Cemetery, 80-01 Metropolitan Avenue, Middle Village, NY 11379.
