Kathleen Haid passed away on April 22nd 2019, one day after her favorite day of the year, Easter Sunday. She was grateful to have been able to bring her husband, children, and grandchildren together one last time after hosting annual Easter Sunday Celebrations for over 40 years. Her Easter parties were emblematic of her approach to and zest for life: she created loving, inclusive spaces for everyone around her and enjoyed celebrating life to the fullest.
Kathleen was born in New York City on July 25th, 1935 to Peter McAvoy and Catherine Crowley. She had one sister, Mary Callahan, with whom she remained close her entire life. They loved spending time together and brought their families together for holidays through the years – especially Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving. This created many wonderful relationships and memories for all.
Kathleen had a very sharp mind. She studied at St. Nicholas of Tolentine and Bishop McDonnell and ultimately graduated Valedictorian from Fordham University. She went on to complete her Master’s Degree and work as a Teacher and Guidance Counselor in the NYC Public School System for over 25 years. She was truly passionate about education and cherished her years working with students, fellow faculty and school administrators.
On December 28, 1957, she married the boy from around the corner, William Haid. Kathleen and Bill spent a joyous and loving life together for over 60 years; they were the lights in each other’s lives. They traveled extensively and saw the world together, but would always return home to Utopia Parkway - a home in which they lived together for 56 years. They filled their home with love and welcomed three children and five grandchildren into their lives.
Kathleen was heavily involved in her community and church. She was a loyal parishioner and Eucharist Minister at Holy Family Church for her entire adult life. She served as both president of the PTA and the Rosary Society, and as a Girl Scout leader for Jeanne’s troop. She was extraordinarily generous with her time and money, always without fanfare.
Kathleen’s legacy will live on with her children: Billy, Peter, and Jeanne Haid as well as their spouses, Joanne Haid and Lisa Haid, and grandchildren, Luke, Ryan, Cara, Allie and Casey. Kathleen was a fiercely loyal, kind and supportive woman who looked out for her family and friends. She touched many lives and everyone who knew Kathleen had a story to tell; all felt that they knew her intimately. Kathleen will be deeply missed.
Calling hours will take place on Friday, April 26, 2019 from 2PM to 5PM and from 7PM to 9PM at Frederick’s Funeral Home, located at 192–15 Northern Blvd, Flushing, NY 11358.
