Lazarus Gomes, aged 85, peacefully passed away on Monday, December 30, 2024 at his home in Queens, New York. He was born on July 27, 1939 in Padrishibpur, Bangladesh to German and Elizabeth Gomes. Lazarus was the middle child of seven brothers and two sisters. After earning his dual Master's degrees in theology and philosophy, he also completed his seminary training and was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest. After faithfully serving the church for 15 years, he voluntarily resigned from his vocation to marry Magdalena Gita Halder and raised two daughters as a Bengali-English translator, teacher and businessman. Lazarus was fluent in five languages and was deeply passionate about his Bengali language, culture and history. Due to religious persecution as a Christian, Lazarus immigrated to the U.S. with his family in 1995 and restarted his life in New York City as a minister and an English instructor. He was a devoted follower of Christ who emphasized the value of frugality and sacrifice to overcome hardship and injustice. Lazarus is survived by his wife, Magdalena, daughters Linda and Deborah, and grandson, Peter.
A visitation for Lazarus will be held Thursday, January 2, 2025 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Frederick Funeral Home, 192-15 Northern Boulevard, Flushing, NY 11358. All are welcome.
