Maria Luisa Viveros "Pita"

Maria Luisa Viveros, affectionately known to so many as “Pita,” passed away peacefully on September 9, 2026, at the age of 94. Originally from Colombia, Pita lived a life defined by love, generosity, family, and an unwavering belief in the goodness of people.

Pita was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She is survived by her children, Monica Lopez, Sam Hoyos, and Fernando Hoyos, and was preceded in death by her beloved son, Edgar Moncayo.

She leaves behind grandchildren Jaime Colon, Daniel Díaz, Natalie Colon, Luisa Fernanda, Monica Moncayo, Luisita Sklavonitis, Sebastian Salazar, Steve Hoyos, and Sam Hoyos, as well as eight great-grandchildren, who will carry her love and memory forward.

Pita was a woman with a great sense of humor, an enormous heart, and a generosity that knew no limits. She gave freely and rarely asked for anything in return. Her home was always open, her table always had room for one more, and there was always food to share. No matter the circumstances, she would offer whatever she had—her home, her food, her clothing, and even her last dollar—to someone who needed it.

She had a remarkable ability to see the good in everyone. Pita did not look for faults in people; she looked for their goodness. She was selfless in a way that is rare, and her kindness touched countless lives.

Professionally, Pita worked in cosmetology as a hairdresser, a profession that allowed her not only to work with her hands but also to connect with and care for people. Her warmth and personality made everyone around her feel welcome.

Pita was the last living sibling of Maria Elia, Maria Cecilia, Maria Teresa, Luz Maria, and Obdulia. She carried the memories and traditions of her family with her throughout her life.

But to those who knew her, Pita was so much more than a grandmother to her own grandchildren. She was everyone’s Abuela.

At one point or another, someone slept in her home, ate at her table, received her kindness, or found comfort in her presence. She never needed a reason to help. If you were hungry, she fed you. If you needed a place to stay, she opened her home. If you needed something she had, she would find a way to give it to you.

She truly would take the clothes off her own back and give you her last dollar without asking a single question.

That was Pita.

Her greatest legacy will not be measured by possessions or accomplishments, but by the countless people who felt loved, welcomed, fed, protected, and cared for because she was in their lives.

Her family will forever remember her laughter, her humor, her open door, her generous heart, and the unconditional love she gave so freely.

Although her passing leaves an immeasurable emptiness, Pita’s love will continue through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and through all the many people who were fortunate enough to call her Abuela.

Rest peacefully, Pita. You gave so much to everyone. Your love will live on in all of us.

Visitation will be held at Frederick Funeral Home, 192-15 Northern Boulevard, Flushing, NY 11358, US, on September 15, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, and from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, 136-76 41st Ave, Flushing, NY 11355, on September 16, 2026, at 9:30 am.

Burial will follow at Mount St. Mary Cemetery, 172-00 Booth Memorial Ave, Flushing, NY 11365.
