Mary Pauline Rutigliano was born on November 29th, 1932 in Corona, New York to Filomena Laronga (née Dellicurti) and John Laronga. Mary met her future husband Tony working in a factory. She always said that he came in, they locked eyes, and from that moment it was love at first sight. After briefly living in California and returning to Queens, New York, Mary worked as a switchboard operator, connecting people’s calls from all over the world. However, Mary’s true career was as the Food Services Director at P.S.14Q, where she led the public school’s kitchen staff and fed hundreds of kids each day, providing nutritious meals and stability for many children. In her time at home, Mary and Tony raised two boys, and was an incredible home cook in her own right. Mary ran a tight ship and could make dozens of manicotti from scratch in a single sitting, to be devoured by her husband, sons, and plenty of local family visitors. Mary and Tony loved to spend time with family and adored their four grandchildren. They were married for 67 years and loved to travel during their retirement years together. Mary was a lover of Neil Diamond, an avid gardener, a great holiday decorator, and a celebrator of family. She is remembered for her many, many wonderful qualities, her humor, the love she infused into all her wonderful meals (including her huge trays of baked rigatoni!), fondness of classic films, and for all the time spent with the ones she loved.
