Matilda was born in the Bronx on Feb. 5, 1920. After graduating from Theodore Roosevelt High School, she worked in Manhattan and Queens.
In December 1941, two weeks after Pearl Harbor, she married Charles Crowe. They lived in the Bronx and in Detroit before moving to Flushing in 1952. Charles died suddenly in 1965, leaving her to raise their three children. She then returned to the workforce, at the office of Dr. Stanley Fine, where she was the medical receptionist for 30 years.
Even with work and all the challenges of widowhood and single parenthood, she provided a warm and loving home for her children and for their friends. She would always add an extra plate and enjoyed the busy household.
She pursued interests, taking dance lessons at the local community center, as well as knitting and sewing. Those who own a pair of her knit slippers or one of her tote bags or jewelry cases are forever grateful.
After retiring in 1995, she became a daily communicant at the Church of Mary’s Nativity, and made a whole new group of friends.
She was predeceased by her husband Charles and by her sister Josephine and by most of her good friends.
She is survived by her daughter Karen Hirdt and her husband Steve, her son Robert and his wife Maria, and her son Richard and his wife Dora, as well as six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
She was much loved and will be greatly missed.
