And Paul Kontonis
With his sudden passing this week there is no way to singularly remember Paul Kontonis. Always more than any one thing, with Paul it was never “or”. It was always “and”.
Yes father of Theo and Niko, and a father that passed on focus and dedication to what you love and so much more. And husband to the love of his life Heather since their early days at NYU. And son to loving parents Helene and Dionysios and ever the big brother to Nastasya.
Yes in his final years soccer was at the center of Paul’s life. And he served as a director and coach for the Eleftheria Pancyprian Soccer Club, helping build programs and mentor players.
And he invested in every age group, making players feel confident, valued, and capable.
And he served as President of the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League, dedicating countless hours to improving youth soccer across New York City. And his passion and commitment shaped generations of players, with an impact that will continue to be felt for years to come.
And a visionary for building new businesses like For Your Imagination and Fabric Media. And leading brand content innovation at large ad agencies like Edelman and Digitas. And forging new paths in content marketing on his way to becoming a full-fledged media CMO at media companies like Whosay and playing a key role in the company's integration into Viacom. And building community at every stop along the way from the earliest days of digital content startups just as the YouTube web video boom began.
And the community grew, and always advising and helping anyone who asked and even those who didn't, with the next pivot or the next expansion. And the bonds he built, never wavering and always one call or text away.
And there was music, always music from Queen and Genesis and Boston, to the latest playlist he sent around and the video he sent of the restaurant band in his last group chat message. And band manager to Sound Advice and The Delegates and Curious Fools.
And the food! Master gatherer for dinners amongst family and friends in New York at the newest restaurants or random finds or grilling in the backyard every possible opportunity even in the rain and snow. And industry dinners in Cannes and LA. And the seafood platter on the beach at Wall’s Wharf. And any beach on every day possible in summer. And the caribbean family vacations discovering the best food on the islands.
And the world he traveled expanded all of our worlds as well. His stories of Greece, of course, and Norway and Senegal and Portugal most recently lots of Spain and Poland. And events sprung from his mind and his heart, Augustus Festival and NewFronts/On-Fronts and Webby Awards and parties at the FYI Loft, and hosting and not just the life but the lifeblood of the parties.
And that spirit infused it all, that spirit of magic only he could bring to a table, a room, an event, a team, a family, a life. And the hole he leaves in the hearts of anyone fortunate enough to have shared in his magic.
And we invite you to skip the flowers and celebrate Paul’s memory by visiting
to share, contribute, and help us keep paul’s legacy alive today and in the future.
