Patrick E. McShane

July 31, 1965January 1, 2021

Patrick Emmett McShane, 55, of Bayside, NY, passed away on January 1, 2021 of natural causes at his home in Bayside. Patrick grew up in Astoria, NY and attended P.S.17, St. Joseph’s School and Monsignor McClancy Memorial High School, graduating in 1983. A voracious reader and lifetime student with varied interests, Patrick accumulated many credits at area educational institutions such as St, John’s University, SUNY Maritime College, The College of Staten Island and Queensborough Community College. He also sought out specialized courses across the country. He had a special aptitude for technical subjects and earned several certifications. He worked for several years for New York City and thereafter worked 28 years for the New York State Department of Transportation, ultimately achieving the title of Civil Engineer. He was an active and vocal member of his state employee union, the New York State Public Employees Federation, serving as a Shop Steward for a number of years. He enjoyed his involvement in the Boy Scouts, amateur rocketry, paddling kayaks around the East River, and tango dancing. He was a proud Irish-American and active member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians who marched in many St. Patrick’s Day parades. A devoted son, he cared for his mother, Joan, for years after his father James passed in 1995. He was a large and often jovial man and enjoyed a special relationship with his dear nephew “Little Jimmy.” He is survived by his brother James J. McShane III, sister-in-law Kathleen McShane (Flanagan), and nephew James J. McShane IV, and his sister Jennifer P. McShane Sapienza, brother-in-law Stephen L. Sapienza and nephews Rex J. Sapienza and Casey Patrick Sapienza. He was preceded in death by his parents James J. McShane II and Joan McShane (Seeley). He is also survived by his aunt Maureen O’Connor, uncle Edmond McShane and many McShane family cousins. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catholic Charities of Brooklyn and Queens.

I met Patrick at a union convention when someone was giving me a difficult time Patrick was a big man and he straightened that person out. I never forgot that kindness. He was always kind and supportive. RIP.

My world got so much smaller because Patrick and I talked at least twice a month. He was well read and we had good conversations. I tried to convince him to come and live with me so we could keep each other company. Patrick was skeptical because New York was all he knew. Patrick loved his family and city. I hope something good comes out of this, because Patrick was alone despite coming from a large family. He loved little Jimmy very much. I believe he loved me and I loved him. I will see him in heaven, but until then I will miss him very much. Jimmy
