Richard Forst Ammon, 82, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2017. Born February 9th, 1935 in Manhattan, he was the only child of Frank and Louise (Forst) Ammon. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Maria Elexia (Barinas) Ammon; two children and their spouses, Jeffrey and Claire Ammon of Lincoln, MA and Deanna Louise Gagne and her husband, Kurt Edward Gagne of Windham, CT; and three grandchildren, Leo, Lewis, and Logan.
The only Deaf person in his family, he attended the Lexington School for the Deaf and the P.S. 47 School for the Deaf, both in Manhattan, before attending public schools during high school. He prized his membership and participation in the Deaf community, joking and telling stories in sign language with his family and friends.
Richard had a soul that always sought out the outdoors and physical activity. He always boasted about his time on the High School swim team and about how often he was asked to dance. As an adult, he loved to fish and hunt and to blaze new trails in uncharted woods with a dog always by his side. When not outdoors he loved to live vicariously through the individuals real and fictional in the books he read. A loving father, he instilled in his children an avid curiosity about the world and a love of reading.
The family will receive visitors 192-15 Northern Blvd, Flushing. Burial will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Astoria.
