Wilfredo Guzman, loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, uncle, cherished friend and Compay, passed away on Thursday surrounded by his family. Born in San German, Puerto Rico, he moved to Brooklyn at age five with his parents, where he grew up the son of a mailman and a homemaker. He later became the first in his family to earn an Associates degree from FIT.
Wilfredo aka Freddy began his career as an insurance agent/accountant, but his life changed the night he met his future wife, Rosita, at a dance. Together they built a warm, faith-filled home on Sullivan Street in Greenwich Village. He opened a successful business in Brooklyn with his brother who passed away many years ago and was embraced by his wife’s 7 brothers and sisters, whom he would take on as if they were his own. Freddy and Rosita moved to Flushing Queens, living next door to their daughter for over 20 years.
Freddy was known for his loyalty, kindness, and the effortless way he made others feel at home. He would give you the shirt off his back if he thought it would help you. He loved conversation, a good joke, a scotch and soda, tinkering and playing his many guitars, classic western movies, blasting salsa classics from El Gran Combo and Hector Lavoe, and his effortless dancing that swept you off your feet. He loved to host family and friends for any occasion and was ready to drive you at a moment’s notice anywhere you needed to go.
Abuelo was a man of deep faith, carrying his pocket New Testament everywhere he went. He recently celebrated 58 years of marriage with his wife Rosita and he adored his daughters Darice and Giselle, his son Michael and his grandchildren, Natalia, Alexa, Taudis, Johnny and Mikey and proudly shared their accomplishments with anyone willing to listen.
Abuelo’s generous spirit, devotion to his family, and bright, gentle presence will be profoundly missed. Our hearts ache but we are comforted knowing his love remains in the laughter, the memories, and the legacy he leaves behind with those who were blessed to know him. We will never forget how he made us feel whenever he smiled. Bendicion Abuelo, may you rest in peace.
