

Alfred “Al” Weingarten, age 100, of Howard Beach, NY, passed away on January 24, 2024 surrounded by his family. Alfred was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 6, 1923 to Isadore and Marion Weingarten.
Devoted to his family, he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was married to his wife, Helen (z”l), for 54 years. He is survived by his four children, Sheldon, Phil, Alan and Gary, his grandchildren, Seth, Justin, Jimmy, Alena, Matthew, Dani, Sheri, Jake and great grandchildren, Sarah, Hannah, Aiden, Jonathan, Ava, Jason and Lincoln.
Al was a World War II Veteran and crossed the Atlantic on the Queen Mary. He later worked in the home improvement business and eventually became the owner of the company. The oil crisis of 1973 necessitated a change of career at which time he became an insurance broker at Metropolitan Life. As a broker, he received every milestone that could have been achieved.
Al also had an amazing gift for math. He was valedictorian of his high school where he received honors in mathematics. He had an incredible ability to calculate the total bill of the shopping cart before the receipt was even printed.
He married his beloved wife, Helen, in 1949 after meeting in Coney Island. They later raised their four children in Brooklyn and then Howard Beach, but their love of Brooklyn remained. He never missed any of his children’s sporting events or activities. Al became known as “Poppy” to his grandchildren and spent many weekends with them watching sports, especially baseball, and enjoying Saturday night dinners.

A service will be held on Friday, January 26, 2024 at 11:30am at Sinai Chapels, 114-03 Queens Blvd, Forest Hills, NY 11375. Following the funeral service will be a committal service from 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM at Wellwood Cemetery, 1400 Wellwood Avenue, West Babylon, NY 11704
