Dear Mrs. Goldstein and family,
I had the pleasure and honor of working with Alter at Schnitzer Steel through some complex times, usually when we bought other companies.  He helped me learn, welcomed questions no matter how far fetched and had gracious and many times humorous answers.  Everytime I travelled from Portland to the City he made me feel welcome and always had the inside scoop on great restaurants.  My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.  We miss him.

I have met and worked with many outstanding people over the past 7 years at Schnitzer. Alter ranked amongst the best. I am privileged to have been able to both learn from him and enjoy his company. Conference calls and off site meetings will never be the same and I will always have fond memories of Alter. Just thinking of him now  brings a smile to my face and sadness to my heart. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this time of mourning.

Dear Mrs Goldstein, I have had the privilege to be a colleague of Alter's for the past 5 years at Schnitzer Steel during which he educated and helped me using his unparalleled knowledge of the recycling industry and insights from across the globe. I always liked to listen to Alter, he had a special ability to communicate with great clarity and often entertained us by injecting humor and many anecdotes from his experiences. He was also very patient with me and others as we asked him many questions to which he always knew the answers or offered a clear opinion. Alter was a man of great substance and character, and I know his family meant so much to him as did his faith. We all greatly respected Alter and his passing has been a terrible shock to us all that words are not ample to describe. I will miss Alter greatly.
