We were so saddened to read of Barbara's passing in today's New York Times. As distant cousins, she, her sister, and her parents, Joe and Frieda Gottesman were an important part of the fabric and history of our family. (Her dad, Joseph Gottesman and my mother, Margaret Greenspan Shapiro were first cousins, and years ago, Joe had also been our family doctor. ) 

We most recently saw Barbara at my Uncle Phil Greenspan's funeral a number of years ago after I had called her, and she was, as always, elegant, gracious and lovely.
